The modern tradition of archaeological research at the Roman station of Hradisko u Mušova and in the immediate vicinity is the focus of the work of the detached site in Dolní Dunajovice. The research base was set up in 1981 specially to cater to the needs of rescue excavations of archaeological localities under threat from the construction of the Nové Mlýny reservoirs. Since 1986 it has gradually profiled itself as a specialised workplace focusing on research into the Roman Period and the Migration Period (1st – 6th centuries A.D.). In 1999 the base acquired its own building in the municipality, which in recent years has been refurbished and is now a modern research workplace and a fully-fledged scientific facility.

The site’s research priorities include the wholly unique remains of the Roman base left here by the legions of Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the second half of the 2nd century A.D., although interest also focuses on understanding the world of the Germanic tribes that settled in South Moravia after the turn of the century. The staff of the detached site also assist in rescue building work at endangered archaeological monuments in the region and in processing discovered artifacts.
