Department of Contemporary Continental Philosophy

The department consists of a team of leading Czech and foreign researchers working in the area of continental philosophy. The department focus is on a wide spectrum of topics ranging from philosophy of the body, to philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, philosophy of sociality, philosophy of psychiatry, performance philosophy and artistic research. These topics are dealt with from the perspectives inspired mainly, but not exclusively, by the European traditions of phenomenology, hermeneutics, psychoanalysis, critical theory and post-structuralism. The department’s scientific mission foregrounds an interdisciplinary cooperation between philosophy and diverse scientific fields, such as applied ethics, art theory, anthropology, psychology, linguistics, sociology, biology, or neuroscience. The members of the department both take an active part in the present-day international debates in continental philosophy and provide a substantial portion of Czech-written scientific production in the field.

Recently, the department received five national and two international research grants on diverse topics, including e.g. “Measures for the development of an ethical culture in Czech public administration”, “Towards a new ontology of social cohesion”, “Music and image in the 20th century’s thought” or “Unity and multiplicity in contemporary thought”. The department has an intense international collaboration with top research institutions in continental philosophy worldwide. This includes a long-term cooperation with e.g. the Husserl Archive – ENS Paris, the Husserl Archive – University of Cologne, the Center for Advanced Research in Phenomenology – University of Memphis, the Centre for Subjectivity Research – University of Copenhagen, the Centre for Applied Philosophy, Politics and Ethics – University of Brighton, and many others.
