Abstract:
We give an introduction to Levy stable distributions and discuss their
application to the
description of physical systems with large fluctuations. Special
emphasis is put on the
unusual statistical mechanical properties of these systems, in
particular ergodicity
breaking. A number of relevant experimental observations are presented.
