The Institute of Physics is looking for Ph.D. student in The Laboratory of Biophysics

FZU is a leading public research institute located in Prague, the Czech Republic, which is oriented towards fundamental and applied research in physics. With more than 1300 employees, FZU is the largest institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. FZU pursues high quality, innovative and ground-breaking fundamental research and furthermore, promotes interdisciplinary and applied research.

Here you will work in a multidisciplinary, motivating, and friendly environment. You will work with modern and advanced technologies, focusing on cutting-edge biophysics research and its related fields. You will have creative freedom in thinking outside the box to develop new solutions and innovations. The principal Investigator of the research group is Dr. Hana Lisalova, and the supervisor is Dr. Scott Lynn.

Research Programme

The Department of Optical and Biophysical Systems recently established two new research groups:
The Laboratory of Biophysics and The Laboratory of Functional Biointerfaces. These groups are focused on topics in experimental and theoretical biophysics, including surface-mediated biomolecular interactions and cellular interactions occurring in complex biological media. More details about
the laboratory and the research group can be found at the link below

PhD Student’s Responsibilities and Learning Objectives

We are open for a student to join our team. Our lab is working on exciting new developments and will offer a solid education to interns of all levels, so please apply regardless of your year and experience level.

We offer exciting opportunities for students to be submerged in very interesting scientific problems
of modern biophysics, microfluidics, and 3D printing. During the internship period, your responsibilities will be devoted to conducting experimental work in chemical synthesis, developing microfluidic systems, characterization and analysis of thin film biointerfaces, and biointeraction analysis using both QCM and SPR-based instruments.

What will you learn?

Your multidisciplinary work will require learning a wide range of techniques and methods, both experimental and theoretical, from variety of scientific fields, including:

  • Microfluidic processes
  • 3D modelling and printing: metal-, filament- and resin-based
  • Biosensing: surface plasmon resonance, quartz crystal microbalance
  • Biointeraction analysis
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics
  • Photolithography and microfabrication
  • Surface-initiated polymerization
  • Cell culture and related analysis

Who are we looking for?

We are open for motivated people willing to master a variety of techniques. What you know you will use, and what you don’t know we will teach you. We are looking for:

  • Someone pursuing a degree in biophysics, (bio)chemistry, engineering, biology, materials science, or a related discipline; who
  • Has analytical and problem-solving skills, with a solid mathematical background;
  • Can work on multiple projects in both an individual and team setting;
  • Has effective verbal and written communication skills.

Why should you apply?

In an international, friendly work environment with excellent research facilities, we offer:

  • Cutting-edge research topics with high application potential
  • Working in a multidisciplinary research team
  • A stimulating and friendly supervising and mentoring environment
  • Unique research facilities
  • Training and development possibilities (seminars, workshops, conferences)
  • Soft skills trainings (project management, time management, grants applications, etc.)
  • Working daily with a native English speaker (as well as other language courses)
  • A competitive salary
  • Flexible working hours, including home office
  • And more benefits such as Multisport card, meal vouchers, cooperate kindergarten, etc.

Please feel free to contact us for more information or to join our team.

Terms of employment:
