The special features of Mt. Ventoux (1,912 metres above sea level), Provence, France) create a unique landscape phenomenon of high bio- and eco-diversity. Historically, this site is known as the first mountain to be explored for its aesthetic qualities rather than just from a utilitarian standpoint (F. Petrarch in the Renaissance). Under present-day natural protection, the site is included in the UNESCO "Man and Biosphere" programme and its special character is reflected in its status as a biospheric reserve.
