V roce 1885 se naskytla možnost koupit kostru plajtváka myšoka (Balaenoptera physalus), kterou nabízelo muzeum v Bergenu. Situace využila skupina pražských intelektuálů a podnikatelů, kteří kostru zakoupili s tím, že ji věnují Národnímu muzeu. Muzeum tak získalo jeden z jeho nejznáměších a nejvyhledávanějších exponátů, který dodnes obdivují všechny generace návštěvníků.

The opportunity to buy the skeleton of the Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus) arose in 1885 when a museum in Bergen was offering it for sale. A group of intellectuals and businessmen from Prague took advantage of this opportunity and bought the skeleton with the idea of bequeathing it to the National Museum. In this way the National Museum gained one of its most famous and sought-after exhibits, which has been admired by visitors of all generations to the present day.
