Christian Ochsner Awarded for His Study on Populism
1 August, 2019
CERGE-EI Assistant Professor Christian Ochsner and his colleague Felix Roesel from the ifo Institute in Dresden have been awarded a prize by the Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim (ZEW) for their study on populism.
"Our paper helps to understand how references to historical episodes can frame the selective recognition by the public and shape real-world outcomes from time to time," explained Christian.
"We show in the paper that regions that suffered under Turkish (Ottoman) attacks during the Sieges of Vienna in the 16th and 17th are more likely to vote for the populist far-right after they turned on Turks and Muslim," he added.
The annual Heinz König Young Scholar Award given by ZEW comes with an endowment of 5,000 euros and includes the opportunity to spend an extended research visit at ZEW.
In his previous work, Christian has focused on the issue of migrating extremists and on the economic consequences of the Red Army’s misdeeds after WWII, among other things. His research aims to analyze the evolution of societies in both economic and socio-cultural terms.
