SOME IMPORTANT CENTERS FOR INDUSTRIAL MATHEMATICS IN EUROPE

(The list below is by no means exhaustive)

• The European  Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) was founded in 1986, by ten European Mathematical Institutes with the intention of offering their collective knowledge and expertise to European industry. Their main goals are to promote the use of mathematical models in industry, to educate Industrial Mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts and to operate on a European scale. The centers which participate in ECMI are both industrial and academic departments and are mainly situated in Austria, Denmark, Germay, Ireland, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The ECMI website contains many interesting informations about their activities.
• In the field of statistics, the ENBIS network (European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics), organizes meetings yearly for relations with industry and business.
• In Ireland, MACSI, the Mathematics Consortium for Science and industry, is a network of mathematical modellers and scientific computational analysts.
• In Italy, the Milano groups MOX and Miriam/Adamss, the Firenze Technology trasfert center I2T3 and the Interuniversity Center “Mathematics for Technology” created by Catania and Firenze, in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Techno–und Wirtschaftmathematik (ITWM) of Kaiserslautern.
• In Germany, strong interaction between Mathematics and Industry takes place in the Fraunhofer institutes in Kaiserslautern and Goeteborg, as well as in the Research centerMatheon in Berlin (in particular their two partners Zuse Institute and Weierstrass Institute).
• In Sweden, the Fraunhofer-Chalmers Research Center for Industrial Mathematics in Göteborg and the CIAM (Center for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) at the KTH (Stockholm).
• In France, the INRIA and several university departments have a lot of industry related activities, like the MIP in Toulouse, the J.-L. Lions lab in Paris VI, the IMB in Bordeaux, etc. Also, there are strong links between university labs and the research centers of big industries or organisms like EDF, CEA, ONERA, EADS, Michelin, IFP, etc. The ORAPgroup relates university research and industry people interested in big computational issues.
• In the UK, the OCIAM, the Oxford Center for applied and industrial and applied Mathematics.
• In the Netherlands, the Eurandom, whose mission is to foster research in the stochastic sciences and their applications.
• In Portugal, the Mathematical Physics Group of the Lisbon University hosts a group of researchers involved in industrial activities.

• In Spain, math-in brings together 40 research groups from 20 Spanish universities and research centres performing technology transfer. In particular, ITMATI, a consortium of the three Galician universities, University of A Coruña, University of Santiago de Compostela and University of Vigo, promotes the transfer of mathematical technology to the fields of Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research and provides effective and agile answers to the needs of businesses, industries and government.

  Located in the Basque Country, the BCAM is an international research centre in Applied Mathematics, designed to act as a catalyst between basic research and technology transfer.

  The Consulting Service of the CRM aims to help enterprises to innovate in their production process. This centre is a consortium formed by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, the Catalan Government and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

• The Industrial Mathematics Cluster at Linz, Austria, consists of the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (RICAM) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Industrial Mathematics Institute at the Kepler University and the R&D company MathConsult. In close cooperation, the partners work on mathematical methods for large variety of industrial areas, including automotive industries, iron and steel production, finance and optics.
