Endemické druhy mohou mít překvapivě malé areály. Nejznámější jsou diverzifikované taxony vzniklé adaptivní radiací na oceánských ostrovech, ale speciaci málo pohyblivých skupin může podporovat i izolovanost jiných habitatů. V prostředí kontinentů to jsou např. stará tektonická jezera nebo vrcholky vysokých hor. Článek uvádí příklady mikroendemismu u suchozemských plžů, hmyzu a sladkovodních blešivců.

Some endemic species inhabit surprisingly small areas. The best known examples are those originating from adaptive radiations on oceanic islands, but speciation of poor dispersers may be promoted by isolation of various habitats, including ancient lakes or sky islands on mountaintops. This article provides some examples of microendemism in land snails, insects and freshwater gammarid amphipods.
