Kniha pojednává o tom, jak byl relativně malý geocentrický obraz kosmu nahrazen ideou nekonečného vesmíru zaplněného množstvím obydlených světů. Tato změna výrazně ovlivnila způsob, jak bylo nahlíženo postavení člověka v kosmu. Hlavní tezí knihy je to, že zvětšení univerza nezpůsobilo šok ani zděšení, ale naopak raně novověcí myslitelé tuto změnu vítali, protože ji chápali jako projev emancipace a autonomizace člověka.
The book discusses how the relatively small geocentric conception of the cosmos has been replaced by the idea of the infinite universe filled with the plurality of inhabited worlds. This change has greatly shaped the way in which humanity's position in the cosmos has been viewed. The main thesis of the book is that the augmentation of the universe did not cause shock or horror but early modern thinkers welcomed this change because they understood it as a manifestation of human emancipation and autonomy.
