Diverzita kapské květeny přesahuje rozmanitost jakékoli jiné květeny temperátní oblasti na srovnatelné ploše. Tuto jedinečnou akumulaci rostlinných druhů lze vysvětlit souhrou působení heterogenních ekologických podmínek (zejména půdního typu a množství srážek), dlouhodobé klimatické stability, periodických požárů a koevoluce s opylovači. Zvláštním rysem kapské flóry je výskyt čtyř endemických čeledí, které jsou v článku podrobně představeny.

The plant diversity in the Cape surpasses the richness of any temperate flora of comparable size. This remarkable accumulation of plant species can be explained by the synergistic effect of heterogeneous ecological conditions (soil type and rainfall pattern in particular), long-term climate stability, periodic wildfires and plant-pollinator co-evolution. A distinct feature of the Cape flora is the occurrence of four endemic plant families, which are discussed in detail.
