A Research Fellowship Established in the Name of Professor Roland
13 February, 2020
The Association for Comparative Economic Studies (ACES) has established a pre-doctoral fellowship in the name of Professor Gérard Roland (UC Berkeley).
"The fellowship was created to encourage research on comparative economics and to recognize the fundamental contributions of Gerard Roland to the field," announced the ACES on its website. The stipends offered within the program could cover the costs of data acquisition, traveling to research meetings or tuition at the home institution, Professor Roland told us. "This can really make a difference and buy time, the most precious asset when working on a doctoral dissertation," he said. Fellowship recipients are expected to pursue academic research that is primarily related to development and transition economics, comparative institutions, political economy or economics of culture. Professor Roland is one of the most influential and successful European economists. Since 1996 he has been a member of the CERGE-EI Executive and Supervisory Board and he has been one of our most dedicated visiting professors.
In 2018 Gérard Roland was awarded the Honorary Medal De Scientia et Humanitate Optime Meritis by the Czech Academy of Sciences, established to recognize eminent personalities for their contributions in the area of science and humanitarian ideas. (Read our blog interview).
Professor Roland is well known among the CERGE-EI community as an excellent researcher and an inspiring teacher, but we also admire his sense of humor and humbleness. Commenting on the establishment of the fellowship in his name, Professor Roland said in his Facebook post: "Very honored that a fellowship was established in my name. And I am still alive".
