Johanka Šebestová

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2005, 6 (2): 15-17

The article analyses the most current myths regarding the sexual harassment in the Czech Republic. Specifically the author examines firstly the myth of non-existence and insignificancy which does not respect its latent nature; secondly she speaks about the myth of subjectivity and selfhood which denies the role of symbolic power and existence of unequal relations between men and women. Thirdly she identifies the myth of irrelevancy and impossibility to define the limits that denies equal moral value of all people; and finally she discusses the myth of malfeasance that denies possible serious harm caused to victims, the most frequently women. These...

Dilemata pozitivní diskriminace a gender mainstreaming jako možné řešení?

Ivana Střílková

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2005, 6 (2): 18-20

The author compares advantages and disadvantages of measures of positive discrimination and strategies of gender mainstreaming. At the beginning she describes the history of both measures and she focuses on their use for the purposes of gender equality. Whereas the author criticizes measures of positive discrimination on the basis of its stigmatizing and categorizing potential effect, she highlights the strategies of gender mainstreaming because of their neutral definitions and preventive character. In particular, she criticizes quotas that in her opinion add members of disadvantaged groups to the system without changing its systemic oppressive nature...

Barbara Havelková

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2005, 6 (2): 21-24

The author's aim is to provide an orientation in the basic norms of European law. The author deals with the act prohibiting discrimination in rewarding and she describes an example of the discrimination which is important not only because the European court of justice applied its test of objective justification for the first time here, but also because in this case European court of justice for the first time involved benefits of employment (e.g. company pension) under the concept of reward. The author also introduces the basic legal norms of the European law concerning the issue of the equal opportunities for men and women. The European law is part...

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2005, 6 (2): 1-2

The article deals with the phenomenon of linguistic sexism in the Czech language. The author argues for the development of non-sexist strategies in the Czech language and proposes the list of possible strategies how to reach gender neutral form of language. Her main argument is that language disposes symbolic power to define the content of gender roles and thus it can naturalize socially constructed interpretation of masculinity and femininity. Furthermore, she proposes examples and unveils the subconsciously working gender unequal practises in using language. For example, it is common in the Czech language to use generic masculine when speaking about...

Kyberfeminismus aneb sdrátovaná identita

Filip Filardo

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2005, 6 (2): 8-9

The paper shows affinity between cyberfeminism and thinking of J. Butler. The first part sums up Butler's texts. The identity is an effect of a repetition of subjectivation practices transmitted by the society. The materiality of the body and the structure of the mind are not conditions but consequences of culture, which are retrospectively naturalized. It's not possible to resist the power from a position of an autonomous subject because subject itself is a product of knowledge-power. The only possible subversion acts from within the power network showing the relativity of the subjectivation practices by means of irony and parody. Cyberfeminism is...

Krása a síla - genderový aspekt československých spartakiád

Petr Roubal

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2005, 6 (2): 10-14

The author deals with history of mass gym performances in the Czech Republic and analyzes theirs social and political meaning. From the point of view of gender that plays important role in rituals using symbolism of human body he compares Sokol festivals which have been taking place since nineteenth century with the communistic mass performances called "Spartakiáda". The mass Sokol exercises express the need to represent the national community. Although women couldn't participate in the public Sokol performances until the end of the nineteenth century, after their involvement there was strictly defined distinct symbolism of the female and male component...

Petra Rakušanová

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2005, 6 (2): 25-30

The article deals with causes of lower involvement of women in political functions in the Czech Republic. The author identifies three sets of significant factors: institutional, socioeconomic and political cultural. Her approach is based on the model proposed by Pippa Norris to explain ratio of women in political functions in western European states, which involves both institutional and social factors that influence women's political participation. Thus, the author focuses on institutional rules that constitute barriers of entry of women in political functions. Furthermore, she studies an influence of ways of functioning of political parties that...

Alena Křížková, Zuzana Uhde

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2005, 6 (2): 31-36

The article deals with the phenomenon of the sexual harassment in the working place in the Czech Republic. The authors analyze sexual harassment as one of effects of men's symbolic power over women causing cultural misrecognition of women and at the same time as one of factors supporting economic inequality between men and women in western societies. They apply the two-dimensional theory of justice by Nancy Fraser and argue that the existence of sexual harassment confirms Fraser's notion of gender as bivalent category as well as the necessity for combining the cultural politics of recognition with politics of redistribution. Furthermore, the article...
