Discover a world of cutting-edge physics research
FZU is the largest institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and our scientists are achieving worldwide success in a wide range of physical sciences - from elementary particles to laser physics. We work with schools, students, industry and the public sphere. Read about our latest research and look up events where you can meet us.
Robot to Detect COVID-19 from Saliva Samples
A device to detect SARS-CoV-2 in saliva samples is one step closer to a real-world application. A unique technology, which was developed by researchers from the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, has shown sensitivity comparable to that of PCR testing.

Memorandum on cooperation on the Czech membership in ELI ERIC has been signed
The Minister of Education, Youth and Sports Robert Plaga, President of the Czech Academy of Sciences Eva Zažímalová, and Director of the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences Michael Prouza signed the memorandum of cooperation on the membership of the Czech Republic in the legal entity of ELI ERIC.
From superlattices to supercrystals
FZU researchers, in a world-wide collaboration led by Dr. Pavlo Zubko from University College London, have found that in superlattices, composed of layers of a ferroelectric material separated by thin metallic spacers, electric dipoles form an unusual pattern of nanoscale domains that order in three dimensions to create a ‘domain supercrystal’, exhibiting outstanding dielectric response.
We know the winner of the FZU’s Photography Competition 2020
The fifteen-member committee had a challenging task of rating 176 photos entered into the Institute of Physics’ Photography Competition 2020. The photograph by Jaroslav Otta reminding of the Tetris game has become a clear winner.
