Drawing on topical methodology and latest findings, the project will explore the beginnings of the artistic tradition in the Czech lands during the reign of the Přemyslids. It will present a new comprehensive perspective for both experts and general public. The research will focus on the image in its diverse forms (sculpture, wall and book painting, goldsmithery, textile production), while the architecture will be treated primarily as a frame of reference within which these
images were created, perceived and interpreted. The project will result in a collective monograph which will analyze the topic using relevant approaches. The images will be studied from interdisciplinary perspective (along with historians) and in Central-European context (along with international experts) with respect to historical circumstances of artefacts' origin, their socio-cultural context and role as means of communication in liturgy, cult and political self-representation. The researchers will also focus on the role of commissioners and especially on the communities of the artworks' users and recipients.
