A patented method of protecting the surface of fuel cells from corrosion, which will extend the life of fuel cells under both emergency and standard conditions, could be used in all 94 nuclear reactors in the United States. Innovative solutions were patented in the Czech Republic by Irena Kratochvílová, František Fendrych, Andrew Taylor (for the Institute of Physics) and Radek Škoda, Jan Škarohlíd (then for the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Czech Technical University) already in 2015.

Ing. Jan Fait on Monday February 1, 2021, successfully defended his dissertation on the topic „Fabrication and characterization of diamond photonic structures“ under the guidance of the supervisor prof. Bohuslav Rezek from the Department of Physics, CTU and supervisor specialist Dr. Lukáš Ondič from the Institute of Physics of the CAS.

Brain4Industry, a consortium led by the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences - as the representative of the Czech Republic - has applied for membership in the European Digital Innovation Hub.

In the public competition of the Czech Science Foundation (GA ČR) with the start of implementation in 2021, the researchers of the Institute of Physics succeeded with 19 projects. The most successful projects include one EXPRO project and three JUNIOR STAR projects which belong into the area of selective projects to support excellence in basic research.

The Minister of Education, Youth and Sports Robert Plaga, President of the Czech Academy of Sciences Eva Zažímalová, and Director of the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences Michael Prouza signed the memorandum of cooperation on the membership of the Czech Republic in the legal entity of ELI ERIC.

The fifteen-member committee had a challenging task of rating 176 photos entered into the Institute of Physics’ Photography Competition 2020. The photograph by Jaroslav Otta reminding of the Tetris game has become a clear winner.

Václav Vrba, our classmate, friend and colleague passed away after a long illness on Tuesday, December 29. His life’s pilgrimage crossed ours in a number of places and for years in our working as well as personal lives and it is difficult for us to accept that it no longer will be so.
