Náš článek je zaměřen na etymologickou a sémantickou analýzu českých (a některých vědeckých) názvů plazů, pocházejících z domorodých jazyků Austrálie a Oceánie. Analýza si všímá nejen lingvistických aspektů, ale také významu různých druhů plazů pro původní obyvatele a jejich vztahu k domorodým kulturám. Článek hledá původní významy jednotlivých názvů a souvislosti se vzhledem, chováním a ekologií těchto druhů. Všímá si také cest, jimiž domorodé názvy doputovaly do češtiny.

Our article focuses on an etymological and semantic analysis of Czech (and some scientific) names of reptiles, borrowed from the native languages of Australia and Oceania. The analysis notices not only the linguistic aspects, but also the importance of some reptiles for native peoples and their culture. This article searches for the original meaning of the names and their relationships to the appearance, beha­viour and ecology of named species. The article also reveals the ways these borrowings were implemented in the Czech language.
