Tender Suffering Presented by Hans von Aachen

Hanging among the Renaissance and Baroque paintings on the walls of the former dining room in the prelature building of Břevnov monastery is a painting of The Man of Sorrows, which has so far remained on the margin of specialist interest. In 2016, Štěpán Vácha (who is responsible for this exhibition) put forward the suggestion that the painting might be the work of Hans von Aachen, court artist to the Emperor Rudolf II. A technological survey, together with the restoration of the painting, carried out by Adam Pokorný, not only confirmed von Aachen as the painter, but also produced further surprising insights. The exhibition presents the painting, reveals the results of the art-historical research, the technological survey and the restoration.
