Sensitivities to biological aerosol particle properties and ageing processes: potential implications for aerosol–cloud interactions and optical properties

Primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs), such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and pollen, represent a small fraction of the total aerosol burden. Given that PBAPs are highly efficient atmospheric ice nuclei (IN) at T > -10 ∘C, we suggest that small changes in their sizes or surface properties due to chemical, physical, or biological processing might translate into large impacts on ice initiation in clouds.

High-resolution optical constants of crystalline ammonium nitrate forinfrared remote sensing of the Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer

In this work, we have retrieved the first low-temperature data set of optical constants for crystalline AN in the 800–6000 cm-1 wave number range with a spectral resolution of 0.5 cm-1. We show that our data accurately fit aircraft-borne infrared measurements of ammonium nitrate particles in the upper tropospheric aerosol layer, which is formed during the Asian summer monsoon period.

A statistical–parametric model of tropical cyclones for hazard assessment

We present the formulation of an open-source, statistical–parametric model of tropical cyclones (TCs) for use in hazard and risk assessment applications. We demonstrate the capability of the model to replicate observed behaviour of TCs, including coastal landfall rates which are of significant importance for risk assessments.

How to vEGU – Networking (part 1): your vEGU21 Profile and the conference Networker

This year, for our annual General Assembly, EGU and our conference provider Copernicus have been working hard to provide a much wider range of networking options than we were able to do in the very short time frame we had, in 2020. These networking options are collected into two types: the Conference Networker, with the ‘Handshake’ function; and the Pop-up Networking Scheduler. If you log in to the vEGU21 platform today you will find that the Conference Networker, linked to …

The new glacial geomorphological map from New Zealand

The new glacial geomorphological map from New Zealand

Geomorphological maps are a fundamental tool to represent landforms and understand how different morphological elements and agents shaped a natural landscape. They are also important as background information for many fields of research including ecology, forestry and of course, glaciology. In this week’s blog, Levan Tielidze tells us about the importance of mapping glacial geomorphology, presenting a new map from New Zealand. This is a joint post, published together with the cryospheric sciences division blog and the geomorphology division blog, …
