Glioblastoma is the most aggressive brain tumor with a low median survival of 14 months. The only Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved treatment for topical delivery of the cancer drug carmustine is Gliadel. However, its use has been associated with several side-effects, mainly provoked by a mass effect. Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube sponges (N-CNSs) are a new type of nanomaterial exhibiting high biocompatibility, and they are able to load large amounts of hydrophobic drugs, reducing the amount of carriers. This study evaluated the use of N-CNSs as potential carmustine carriers using malignant glioma cell lines. N-CNSs were characterized by nanoparticle tracking analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The biocompatibility of N-CNSs was determined in glioma cell lines and in primary astrocytes. Afterward, N-CNSs were loaded with carmustine (1:10 w/w), and the drug and liberation efficiency, as well as cytotoxicity induction, were determined. N-CNSs presented a homogeneous size distribution formed by round nanotubes, without induced cytotoxicity, at concentrations below 40 µg/mL. The N-CNSs loaded with carmustine exhibited a continuous kinetic release of carmustine with a maximum release after 72 h. The cytotoxic effect of N-CNSs loaded with carmustine was similar to that of carmustine alone. The results demonstrated that N-CNSs are a biocompatible nanostructure that could be used as carriers for the tumoral load of large amounts of chemotherapeutic agents. Full article

Flat lens or metalens, as one of the most important application branches of metasurfaces, has recently been attracting significant research interest. Various reflective and transmissive metalenses have been demonstrated in the terathertz, infrared and visible wavelength range. However, metalens operating in the ultraviolet (UV) wavelength range is rare. Moreover, the development of reflective UV metalens, the important counterpart of transmissive ones, falls far behind. In this work, with thorough investigation of material properties, we propose a reflective metalens based on silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and aluminum (Al) that operates in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) to visible wavelength region. Four reflective metalenses were designed and optimized for wavelengths of 193, 441, 532 and 633 nm, and prominent focusing capability was observed, especially for the VUV wavelength of 193 nm. Dispersion characteristics of the metalenses were also studied within ±50 nm of the design wavelength, and negative dispersion was found for all cases. In addition, the SiO₂ + Al platform can be, in principle, extended to the mid-infrared (IR) wavelength range. The reflective VUV metalens proposed in this work is expected to propel miniaturization and integration of UV optics. Full article

Large samples of experimentally produced graphene are polycrystalline. For the study of this material, it helps to have realistic computer samples that are also polycrystalline. A common approach to produce such samples in computer simulations is based on the method of Wooten, Winer, and Weaire, originally introduced for the simulation of amorphous silicon. We introduce an early rejection variation of their method, applied to graphene, which exploits the local nature of the structural changes to achieve a significant speed-up in the relaxation of the material, without compromising the dynamics. We test it on a 3200 atoms sample, obtaining a speed-up between one and two orders of magnitude. We also introduce a further variation called early decision specifically for relaxing large samples even faster, and we test it on two samples of 10,024 and 20,000 atoms, obtaining a further speed-up of an order of magnitude. Furthermore, we provide a graphical manipulation tool to remove unwanted artifacts in a sample, such as bond crossings. Full article

Thanks to the advanced technologies for energy generation such as solar cells and thermo- or piezo-generators the amount of electricity transformed from light, heat or mechanical pressure sources can be significantly enhanced. However, there is still a demand for effective storage devices to conserve electrical energy which addresses the wide range of large stationary applications from electric vehicles to small portable devices. Among the large variety of energy-storage systems available today, electrochemical energy sources and, in particular, supercapacitors (SC), are rather promising in terms of cost, scaling, power management, life cycle and safety. Therefore, this review surveys recent achievements in the development of SC based on composites of such carbon-derived materials as graphene (G) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with carbon nanotubes (CNT). Various factors influencing the specific capacitance are discussed, while specific energy and power as well as cycling stability of SC with G/rGO-CNT composite electrode materials are overviewed. The development of armour systems with higher ballistic resistance and light weight has gained considerable attention as an increasing number of countries are recognising the need to build up advanced self-defence system to deter potential military conflicts and threats. Graphene is a two dimensional one-atom thick nanomaterial which possesses excellent tensile strength (130 GPa) and specific penetration energy (10 times higher than steel). It is also lightweight, tough and stiff and is expected to replace the current aramid fibre-based polymer composites. Currently, insights derived from the study of the nacre (natural armour system) are finding applications on the development of artificial nacre structures using graphene-based materials that can achieve high toughness and energy dissipation. The aim of this review is to discuss the potential of graphene-based nanomaterials with regard to the penetration energy, toughness and ballistic limit for personal body armour applications. This review addresses the cutting-edge research in the ballistic performance of graphene-based materials through theoretical, experimentation as well as simulations. The influence of fabrication techniques and interfacial interactions of graphene-based bioinspired polymer composites for ballistic application are also discussed. This review also covers the artificial nacre which is shown to exhibit superior mechanical and toughness behaviours. Full article

In this study, magnetite nanoparticles were prepared and coated with poly(ethylene glycol) terminated by alendronate to ensure firm binding to the iron oxide surface. Magnetic nanoparticles, designated as magnetite coated with poly(ethylene glycol)-alendronate (Fe₃O₄@PEG-Ale), were characterized in terms of number-average (D_n) and hydrodynamic (D_h) size, ζ-potential, saturation magnetization, and composition. The effect of particles on blood pressure, vascular functions, nitric oxide (NO), and superoxide production in the tissues of spontaneously hypertensive rats, as well as the effect on red blood cell (RBC) parameters, was investigated after intravenous administration (1 mg Fe₃O₄/kg of body weight). Results showed that Fe₃O₄@PEG-Ale particles did negatively affect blood pressure, heart rate and RBC deformability, osmotic resistance and NO production. In addition, Fe₃O₄@PEG-Ale did not alter functions of the femoral arteries. Fe₃O₄@PEG-Ale induced increase in superoxide production in the kidney and spleen, but not in the left heart ventricle, aorta and liver. NO production was reduced only in the kidney. In conclusion, the results suggest that acute intravenous administration of Fe₃O₄@PEG-Ale did not produce negative effects on blood pressure regulation, vascular function, and RBCs in hypertensive rats. Transparent p-CuI/n-SiZnSnO (SZTO) heterojunction diodes are successfully fabricated by thermal evaporation of a (111) oriented p-CuI polycrystalline film on top of an amorphous n-SZTO film grown by the RF magnetron sputtering method. A nitrogen annealing process reduces ionized impurity scattering dominantly incurred by Cu vacancy and structural defects at the grain boundaries in the CuI film to result in improved diode performance; the current rectification ratio estimated at ±2 V is enhanced from ≈10⁶ to ≈10⁷. Various diode parameters, including ideality factor, reverse saturation current, offset current, series resistance, and parallel resistance, are estimated based on the Shockley diode equation. An energy band diagram exhibiting the type-II band alignment is proposed to explain the diode characteristics. The present p-CuI/n-SZTO diode can be a promising building block for constructing useful optoelectronic components such as a light-emitting diode and a UV photodetector. Full article

Given the thermal management problem aroused by increasing power densities of electronic components in the system, graphene-based papers have raised considerable interest for applications as thermal interface materials (TIMs) to solve interfacial heat transfer issues. Significant research efforts have focused on enhancing the through-plane thermal conductivity of graphene paper; however, for practical thermal management applications, reducing the thermal contact resistance between graphene paper and the mating surface is also a challenge to be addressed. Here, a strategy aimed at reducing the thermal contact resistance between graphene paper and the mating surface to realize enhanced heat dissipation was demonstrated. For this, graphene paper was decorated with polydopamine EGaIn nanocapsules using a facile dip-coating process. In practical TIM application, there was a decrease in the thermal contact resistance between the TIMs and mating surface after decoration (from 46 to 15 K mm² W⁻¹), which enabled the decorated paper to realize a 26% enhancement of cooling efficiency compared with the case without decoration. This demonstrated that this method is a promising route to enhance the heat dissipation capacity of graphene-based TIMs for practical electronic cooling applications. Full article

Derived from magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), magnetosomes consist of magnetite crystals enclosed within a lipid bilayer membrane and are known to possess advantages over artificially synthesized nanoparticles because of the narrow size distribution, uniform morphology, high purity and crystallinity, single magnetic domain, good biocompatibility, and easy surface modification. These unique properties have increasingly attracted researchers to apply bacterial magnetosomes (BMs) in the fields of biology and medicine as MRI imaging contrast agents. Due to the concern of biosafety, a long-term follow-up of the distribution and clearance of BMs after entering the body is necessary. In this study, we tracked changes of BMs in major organs of mice up to 135 days after intravenous injection using a combination of several techniques. We not only confirmed the liver as the well-known targeted organs of BMs, but also found that BMs accumulated in the spleen. Besides, two major elimination paths, as well as the approximate length of time for BMs to be cleared from the mice, were revealed. Together, the results not only confirm that BMs have high biocompatibility, but also provide a long-term in-vivo assessment which may further help to forward the clinical applications of BMs as an MRI contrast agent. The superior mechanical properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) play a significant role in the improvement of the mechanical and thermal stability of an epoxy matrix. However, the agglomeration of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the epoxy is a common challenge and should be resolved to achieve the desired enhancement effect. The present paper investigated the thermal, mechanical, and water uptake properties of epoxy nanocomposites with surfactant-modified MWCNTs. The nanocomposites were prepared through the incorporation of different weight concentrations of MWCNTs into the epoxy matrix. Comparative analysis of neat epoxy and epoxy/CNT nanocomposites were conducted through thermal, mechanical, microscopic, and water uptake tests to reveal the improvement mechanism. The homogenous distribution of the CNTs in the epoxy was achieved by wrapping the surfactant onto the CNTs. The addition of surfactant-modified CNTs into the epoxy caused an obvious increase in the mechanical and thermal properties. This improvement mechanism could be attributed to the uniform dispersion of the CNTs in the epoxy matrix reducing the free volume between the polymer chains and restricting the chain segmental mobility, leading to strong interfacial bonding and an efficient load transfer capability between the CNTs and the epoxy matrix. However, the mechanical and thermal properties of the epoxy/CNT nanocomposite decreased owing to the agglomeration effect when the concentration of the CNTs exceeded the optimal percentage of 1.5%. Additionally, the CNTs could impart a reduction in the wettability of the surface of the epoxy/CNT nanocomposite, leading to the increase in the contact angle and a reduction in the water uptake, which was significant to improve the durability of the epoxy. Moreover, the higher weight concentration (2%) of the CNTs showed a greater water uptake owing to agglomeration, which may cause the formation of plenty of microcracks and microvoids in the nanocomposite. CsPbIBr₂, a cesium-based all-inorganic halide perovskite (CsPe), is a very promising alternative material to mainstream organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskite (HPe) materials owing to its exceptional moisture stability, thermal stability, and light stability. However, because of the wide band gap (2.05 eV) of CsPbIBr₂, it has a low power conversion efficiency (PCE), which hinders its application in highly efficient solar cells. In this study, a facile nanoimprinted one-dimensional grating nanopattern (1D GNP) formation on mesoporous TiO₂ (mp-TiO₂) photoelectrodes was introduced to improve the effective light utilization and enhance the performance of CsPbIBr₂ perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The 1D GNP structure on the mp-TiO₂ layer increases the light absorption efficiency by diffracting the unabsorbed light into the active mp-TiO₂ and CsPbIBr₂ layers as well as increasing the charge separation and collection due to the extended interfacial contact area between the mp-TiO₂ and CsPbIBr₂ layers. Consequently, both the current density (J_SC) and the fill factor (FF) of the fabricated cells improved, leading to over a 20% enhancement in the solar cell’s PCE. Thus, this periodic grating structure, fabricated by simple nanoimprinting, could play an important role in the large-scale production of highly efficient and cost-effective Cs-based PSCs. The use of carbon dots (CDs) with dual emission based on ratiometric fluorescence has been attracting attention in recent times for more accurate ion detection since they help avoid interference from background noise, probe concentration, and complexity. Herein, novel dual-emission nitrogen-doped CDs (NCDs) were prepared by a simple method for Cu²⁺ and ClO^- detection. The NCDs showed excellent anti-interference ability and selectivity for different emissions. In addition, a good linear relationship was observed between the fluorescence intensity (FI) of the NCD solutions in different emissions with Cu²⁺ (0–90 μM) and ClO⁻ (0–75 μM). The limits of both Cu²⁺ detection and ClO⁻ were very low, at 17.7 and 11.6 nM, respectively. The NCDs developed herein also showed a good recovery rate in water for Cu²⁺ and ClO⁻ detection. Hence, they are expected to have a more extensive application prospect in real samples. Full article

Mixed ferrite nanoparticles with compositions Co_xMn_1-xFe₂O₄ (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0) were synthesized by a simple chemical co-precipitation method. The structure and morphology of the nanoparticles were obtained by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The average crystallite sizes decreased with increasing x, starting with 34.9 ± 0.6 nm for MnFe₂O₄ (x = 0) and ending with 15.0 ± 0.3 nm for CoFe₂O₄ (x = 1.0). TEM images show an edge morphology with the majority of the particles having cubic geometry and wide size distributions. The mixed ferrite and CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles have an inverse spinel structure indicated by the splitting of A_1g peak at around 620 cm⁻¹ in Raman spectra. The intensity ratios of the A_1g(1) and A_1g(2) peaks indicate significant redistribution of Co²⁺ and Fe³⁺ cations among tetrahedral and octahedral sites in the mixed ferrite nanoparticles. Magnetic hysterics loops show that all the particles possess significant remnant magnetization and coercivity at room temperature. The mass-normalized saturation magnetization is highest for the composition with x = 0.8 (67.63 emu/g), while CoFe₂O₄ has a value of 65.19 emu/g. The nanoparticles were PEG (poly ethylene glycol) coated and examined for the magneto thermic heating ability using alternating magnetic field. Heating profiles with frequencies of 333.45, 349.20, 390.15, 491.10, 634.45, and 765.95 kHz and 200, 250, 300, and 350 G field amplitudes were obtained. The composition with x = 0.2 (Co_0.2Mn_0.8Fe₂O₄) with saturation magnetization 57.41 emu/g shows the highest specific absorption rate (SAR) value of 190.61 W/g for 10 mg/mL water dispersions at a frequency of 765.95 kHz and 350 G field strength. The SAR values for the mixed ferrite and CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles increase with increasing concentration of particle dispersions, whereas for MnFe₂O₄, nanoparticles decrease with increasing the concentration of particle dispersions. SARs obtained for Co_0.2Mn_0.8Fe₂O₄ and CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles fixed in agar ferrogel dispersions at frequency of 765.95 kHz and 350 G field strength are 140.35 and 67.60 W/g, respectively. This study shows the importance of optimizing the occupancy of Co²⁺ among tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel system, concentration of the magnetic nanoparticle dispersions, and viscosity of the surrounding medium on the magnetic properties and heating efficiencies. Graphene is a promising building block material for developing novel photonic and optoelectronic devices. Here, we report a comprehensive experimental study of chemical-vapor deposited (CVD) monolayer graphene’s optical properties on three different substrates for ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared spectral ranges (from 240 to 1000 nm). Importantly, our ellipsometric measurements are free from the assumptions of additional nanometer-thick layers of water or other media. This issue is critical for practical applications since otherwise, these additional layers must be included in the design models of various graphene photonic, plasmonic, and optoelectronic devices. We observe a slight difference (not exceeding 5%) in the optical constants of graphene on different substrates. Further, the optical constants reported here are very close to those of graphite, which hints on their applicability to multilayer graphene structures. This work provides reliable data on monolayer graphene’s optical properties, which should be useful for modeling and designing photonic devices with graphene. Full article

Thin polycrystalline Co₂FeGe films with composition close to stoichiometry have been fabricated using magnetron co-sputtering technique. Effects of substrate temperature (T_S) and post-deposition annealing (T_a) on structure, static and dynamic magnetic properties were systematically studied. It is shown that elevated T_S (T_a) promote formation of ordered L2₁ crystal structure. Variation of T_S (T_a) allow modification of magnetic properties in a broad range. Saturation magnetization ~920 emu/cm³ and low magnetization damping parameter α ~ 0.004 were achieved for T_S = 573 K. This in combination with soft ferromagnetic properties (coercivity below 6 Oe) makes the films attractive candidates for spin-transfer torque and magnonic devices. Full article

Exploring the economical, powerful, and durable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly required for practical application. Herein, nanoclusters-decorated ruthenium, cobalt nanoparticles, and nitrogen codoped porous carbon ([email protected]) are prepared with bimetallic zeolite imidazole frameworks (ZnCo-ZIF) as the precursor. Thus, the prepared [email protected] catalyst with a low Ru loading of 3.13 wt% exhibits impressive HER catalytic behavior in 1 M KOH, with an overpotential of only 30 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm⁻², Tafel slope as low as 32.1 mV dec⁻¹, and superior stability for long-time running with a commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. The excellent electrocatalytic properties are primarily by virtue of the highly specific surface area and porosity of carbon support, uniformly dispersed Ru active species, and rapid reaction kinetics of the interaction between Ru and O. Recently, there has been an increased interest in iron–gold-based hybrid nanostructures, due to their combined outstanding optical and magnetic properties resulting from the usage of two separate metals. The synthesis of these nanoparticles involves thermal decomposition and modification of their surfaces using a variety of different methods, which are discussed in this review. In addition, different forms such as core–shell, dumbbell, flower, octahedral, star, rod, and Janus-shaped hybrids are discussed, and their unique properties are highlighted. Studies on combining optical response in the near-infrared window and magnetic properties of iron–gold-based hybrid nanoparticles as multifunctional nanoprobes for drug delivery, magnetic–photothermal heating as well as contrast agents during magnetic and optical imaging and magnetically-assisted optical biosensing to detect traces of targeted analytes inside the body has been reviewed. Catalytic methane decomposition (CMD) is a highly promising approach for the rational production of relatively CO_x-free hydrogen and carbon nanostructures, which are both important in multidisciplinary catalytic applications, electronics, fuel cells, etc. Research on CMD has been expanding in recent years with more than 2000 studies in the last five years alone. It is therefore a daunting task to provide a timely update on recent advances in the CMD process, related catalysis, kinetics, and reaction products. This mini-review emphasizes recent studies on the CMD process investigating self-standing/supported metal-based catalysts (e.g., Fe, Ni, Co, and Cu), metal oxide supports (e.g., SiO₂, Al₂O₃, and TiO₂), and carbon-based catalysts (e.g., carbon blacks, carbon nanotubes, and activated carbons) alongside their parameters supported with various examples, schematics, and comparison tables. In addition, the review examines the effect of a catalyst’s shape and composition on CMD activity, stability, and products. It also attempts to bridge the gap between research and practical utilization of the CMD process and its future prospects. Full article
