CERGE-EI Media Highlights for December

The award of a second ERC grant, wages, education, the ongoing debate on the results of anti-epidemic measures, and the recovery of the Czech economy were all topics on which experts from CERGE-EI and the IDEA think tank commented in December. Our representatives attended a conference on labor market trends and a new IDEA study on the effects of insufficient literacy has also been published.
Filip Matějka explained his research on fragmented attention in decision-making, which is being supported for the second time by an ERC grant. Further details on the theory of rational inattention were given in interviews for Interview ČT24 and seznamzpravy.cz.
Štěpán Jurajda discussed labor market trends at a conference of the Confederation of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic. Alena Bičáková commented on the proposal for a common EU calculation of the minimum wage and the topic of paying the same wages in the same positions in different regions.
Jan Švejnar talked about the recovery of the Czech economy and the extreme increase in uncertainty. Professor Švejnar discussed the effects of the pandemic on the US and European economies in an interview with E15. René Levinský also commented on the lockdown and the effects of the autumn's government measures in the Czech Republic.
"Uneducated children cost billions" is the topic of a new IDEA study on the effects of better education provided to under-literate 15-year-olds on the long-term growth of the Czech economy in the coming decades, also published in an article in Hospodářské noviny. The effects of online teaching on pupils' knowledge and skills and the use of antigen tests in education are discussed by Daniel Münich in an interview for Český rozhas.
