The journal Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research is a peer-reviewed transdisciplinary journal of gender studies and feminist theory. The journal is published twice a year in print and electronic format (open access). Founded in 2000, the journal is published by the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
By submitting a text for peer review in the journal Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research, authors pledge that they have written a given text themselves or with the contribution of persons whose contribution is clearly specified in the text. Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who have made significant contribution should be listed as co-authors.
Authors pledge that any and all sources used must be properly cited in accordance with copyright and ethical rules of scientific work. If authors have used the work and/or words of others, they should ensure that this has been appropriately cited or quoted. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work.
Authors further pledge that their paper has not been submitted for review in another journal and that it has not been previously published unless an agreement with the editor-in-chief stipulates otherwise.
All authors should disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might be construed to influence the results or the interpretation of their manuscript.
Authors are obliged to participate in peer review process and to provide corrections of mistakes.
The peer review is organized exclusively with regard to the intellectual content of a paper without any regard to an author’s gender, class, sexual orientation, religious creed, ethnicity, citizenship or political opinion. Decisions about the content of any issue shall not be governed by personal interests of the individuals involved, interests of the publisher or other persons. The journal does not charge any article submission fees or article processing fees.
Scientific publications submitted for publication in the journal Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research are presented for review to at least two reviewers. Authors and reviewers remain anonymous to each other. The editor-in-chief has the right to refuse to submit a paper for review if she deems that a paper does not meet the basic criteria placed on a scientific text or if a paper does not concern the area of gender studies and feminist theory. Members of the editorial board have the right to request manuscripts submitted to the editorial staff, including those that the editor-in-chief has rejected before the peer review.
To review papers the editor-in-chief in cooperation with the editorial team selects experts in the topic of the paper. She also takes into account that reviewers not be in close working, institutional or personal relations with the author. Reviewers complete a standardized form stating whether they recommend a paper to be accepted, revised or rejected. They justify their decision in a review where they should also include recommendations for revisions of the text. With regard to the content of the reviews, the editor-in-chief notifies the author whether she accepts, accepts on condition of performing changes, requires revising or rejects a paper. Upon revision, the editor-in-chief first decides whether a paper has been revised adequately. If this condition is not met, she may return a paper for further revision. Where it can be proven that the author has eliminated any and all major problems identified in a peer review, the editor-in-chief may accept a paper without any further ado and submit the paper for approval to the editorial board. Papers where major revisions were required are reviewed in the second round of peer review and reviewed by one of the two original reviewers or by a third reviewer if there is an organizational or material reason. After the second round of review, the editor-in-chief proposes acceptance or rejection depending on the content of the reviews which she submits to the editorial board. The third round of peer review is not allowed, with exceptions. In the event that an author does not find (all or some) recommendations made by reviewers to be justified, s/he can explain her/his position in a letter addressed to the editor-in-chief; subsequent reviewers shall familiarize themselves with the content of such a letter as shall the editorial board during the final discussion of a given paper. A final decision about acceptance or rejection of a paper is in all cases made by the editor-in-chief; she submits this decision for approval to the editorial board. If an author does not agree with the decision of the editor-in-chief, the author may explain his/her reasons in an appeal which the editor-in-chief shall present to the editorial board.
The editor-in-chief and the editorial staff are committed not to publish information about submitted papers to other persons than reviewers and potential reviewers, cooperating editors and an author of a paper. The names of authors remain anonymous until the completion of the peer review.
The standard peer review time is four to five months. The editorial staff is not responsible for delays caused by reviewers.
Peer reviewers are obligated to abide by the principle of impartiality and objectivity and to evaluate a manuscript to the best of their knowledge and belief. Personal criticism of authors is inappropriate. By agreeing to review a paper, a reviewer commits to hand in the review within an agreed deadline. Contacted reviewers are obligated to treat a manuscript confidentially; it is not permitted to distribute papers submitted for review. Contacted reviewers should refuse a manuscript if in conflict of interest. Should reviewers discover any copyright misconduct or have any suspicion of plagiarism, they are obligated to notify the editor-in-chief.
The editor-in-chief has responsibility and authority to refuse to submit a paper for peer review if she deems that a paper does not meet the basic criteria placed on a scientific text, including any form of plagiarism, or if a paper does not concern the area of gender studies and feminist theory. She should have no conflict of interest with respect to authors whose article she rejects. In such cases the responsibility and authority are transfered to deputy editor.

A final decision about acceptance or rejection of a paper is in all cases the responsibility of the editor-in-chief which she submits for approval to the editorial board.
Should the editor-in-chief discover or be notified of a significant error, she is obliged to promote publication of correction or retraction.
The preparation and publishing of the journal are governed by the principles of Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement, which are binding for authors, the editor-in-chief and editors, reviewers, members of the editorial board and the publisher. Upholding the principles of the Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement is the responsibility of the editor-in-chief and is subject to review by the editorial board.
The editor-in-chief and the publisher have taken any and all measures against unfair practices, authorship infringement and plagiarism. They have responsibility to publish corrections, clarifications, or apologies when needed.
The editor-in-chief and the publisher should preclude any business interests from compromising intellectual and ethical standards. They have responsibility to maintain the integrity of the academic record and ensure the quality of the material they publish.
All content published in the journal Gender a výzkum / Gender and research since 2018 is licenced under Creative Commons CC BY-NC (Attribution-NonCommercial).
Authors sign a license agreement with the publisher, where authors have copyright but license publishing rights in their article to the publisher with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work for non-commercial purposes with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal. Authors are allowed to use, reuse, disseminate, share and build upon their article so long as it contains a full attribution to its initial publication in this journal (name of the journal, volume and number, and a DOI link). Authors retain the right to proper attribution and credit for the published work (including patent, trademark and other intellectual property rights to research data).
Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research is an open access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the BOAI definition of open access.
