Postdoctoral Position in the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences

Closing date: 31.07.2021

Contact: Michal Dovčiak

Astronomical Institute (http://www.asu.cas.cz/en/about/about-the-institute) of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic announces a 2-year postdoctoral position, starting in October this year, in the Relativistic Astrophysics group (https://astro.cas.cz/) in the project "Accreting black holes in the new era of X-ray polarimetry missions" (https://astro.cas.cz/expro).

The postdoc will model the emission of the X-ray corona in Galactic black holes in X-ray binary sources, i.e. study the spectral, timing, and polarimetric properties of the X-ray corona emission. To this aim he/she will use, modify and create numerical codes developed in our group. Thus experience with C++ and Python computer languages is needed. Some experience with astronomical data analysis in X-ray domain (using Xspec or similar software) and knowledge of relativistic astrophysics (especially in the field of accretion theory, radiative processes, ray-tracing in curved space-time) will be appreciated. High motivation and ability to work independently as well as in the team collaboration are expected.

The position is opened for 1 year, after which it can be prolonged for another year based on applicant's successful performance. The salary will be based on the domestic level and it includes full health insurance. Commencement is expected on the 1st of October 2021.

Applications containing a Cover Letter, a Curriculum Vitae, a List of Publications, and a Summary of Research Plans should be submitted in a single pdf

subject: “EXPRO-ABH postdoc 2021 – Prague”

Two recommendation letters have to be sent to the same email addresses with the same subject.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD degree in the field and present a certificate of that by the date of employment. Preferences will be given to early-stage researchers. A necessary condition for the appointment is to satisfy the legal requirements for being employed in the Czech Republic.

Closing date: 15.07.2021

Contact: Georgios Loukes-Gerakopoulos

The Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences invites applications for a post-doctoral position in the Relativistic Astrophysics Group to work with the team involved in the international LISA consortium. Candidates are expected to demonstrate research experience in Waveform modeling of Extreme Mass Ratio Inspirals. Active participation at respective work packages of the Waveform Working Group of the LISA scientific consortium and/or experience with space projects are advantageous factors.

The appointment is initially for 7 months; a possible extension is expected upon satisfactory scientific performance and availability of pre-submitted funding applications. The current position will be funded through the PRODEX Experiment project

supporting the Czech involvement in the LISA space mission.

The salary will be based on the domestic level and it includes full health insurance.

Commencement is expected on the 1st of October 2021.

Visiting Research Fellow

Institution: Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences

Location: Prague, Czech Republic

Job announcement text:
The Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences invites applications for an 8-month full-time Visiting Research Fellow program to study star-forming compact galaxies that exhibit possible signatures of active galactic nuclei. Our scientific goals are to better understand the role of star-forming galaxies in the Epoch of Re-Ionization and to characterize accretion processes around intermediate-mass black holes as possible precursors to super-massive black holes hosted in large galaxies.

We were recently awarded new observations of so-called “Blueberry" and "Green Pea” galaxies with the VLA and XMM-Newton. Thus, we are looking for a candidate who is very experienced with radio interferometry, UV photometry/imaging and/or X-ray spectral analysis of faint targets. Our project provides a highly-competitive salary above the standards in Czechia for a postdoctoral researcher (about 48 000 CZK net salary). After this 8-month long project, it may be possible to prolong the stay of a postdoctoral researcher dependent upon the result of pre-submitted funding applications.
To apply, please send a motivation letter and CV to jiri.svoboda@asu.cas.cz before July 14, 2021. Please also ensure two letters of recommendation.

Expected start of the project: September 2021
