Interdisciplinary project deals with the reception of the Holy City of Jerusalem in Czech lands from 11th to the late-15th centuries. It focuses on the sources of visual and written culture as well, which corresponds with the structure of the working team. In addition to visual representations of Jerusalem in wall and book painting and their reverberations in architecture and urban planning, it will include its literary representations in chronicles, travelogues, and other literary genres. The outputs of the project will not only provide the pieces missing from the European mosaic of “Jerusalem studies”, but they will also contribute to the study of medieval mentalities. Examining the notion of Jerusalem and its reception in medieval Bohemian consciousness will enlighten our understanding of medieval concepts of foreignness and alterity, and show how ideas and religious experience were projected onto reality.
