Borrowing Policies
How do I become a library user?
To be allowed to use the library services of all CU libraries, the user must meet the following conditions:
1. The user has a valid Charles University ID card (comes with CAS authentication), which can be obtained from Card Service Center. Please state your permanent address when applying for an external user or alumni user card.
2. The user confirms the electronic application using CAS authentication.
How many items can I borrow and for how long?
Borrowing policies for different user categories are defined in the CU Uniform borrowing matrix.
How do I log into my library account?
With CAS authentication, you can log into the Charles University’s discovery service UKAŽ. In addition to searching for information resources, UKAŽ allows to:
- View and renew your loans
- Make a reservation (request) for a document currently unavailable in open stacks (loaned / in storage)
- Save searched records to Favorites
- Export document details to a citation manager or send them via e-mail
- Check the availability of an electronic journal or e-book in CU holdings
How do I renew my loans?
You can renew your loans online from your library account in UKAŽ. Alternatively, for items loaned from the Jan Kmenta CERGE-EI Library, ask for renewal at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., call the circulation desk at +420 224 005 145, or come by in person.
Can I return materials outside of the opening hours?
Yes, loans can be returned to the library drop box in front of the library entrance (accessible 24/7 for CERGE-EI members, for others daily between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.). Returned items will be written off your account no later than the next opening day.
Can I return materials by post or can my friend return them?
Yes, there is no need to return items in person. If you use the post, please send the items by registered mail.
What happens if I lose or damage an item?
You must compensate the library for the lost or damaged item – by replacing the same title or a similar title, or by paying the price of the item. Please always consult a librarian first regarding acceptable compensation.
Can I pay a fine online?
Currently, you can pay only in cash at the circulation desk.
