Despite the low numbers of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in arable soils, the inoculation of crops which form this type of mycorrhiza is not a universal tool to increase their yields. This is mainly due to the conditions of intensive agricultural systems, unfavourable to mycorrhiza formation. Mycorrhiza can therefore play a major role, particularly in more sustainable agricultural systems.
