Photo-electro-chemical water splitting is a process that uses photon energy to decrease the electrical energy requirement for hydrogen and oxygen evolution from water molecules. Nowadays, it is studied mostly for its potential as solar energy storage. As the original concept in the 1970s worked with TiO2 electrodes, it only utilized UV light. New materials with lower bandgap are researched in order to enable this process with visible light (at high yields).

Oxynitrides with perovskite structure (ABO3-xNx) make up a promising group of materials which exhibits bandgap usually between 1.8 and 2.6 eV. Their properties can be further modified by A and B variation and substitution. This way, not only the band gap but also a position of valence and conduction band can be tuned.

Recently, our group of laser chemistry started to produce and measure layers used in photo-electrochemical processes. Thanks to the Mobility project, it was possible to participate in the research of Thin films and interfaces group at Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland, which is focused on oxynitride perovskite research.
