Welcome to my professional web page! I am a theoretical physicist working in the Mathematical Physics group in the Department of Mathematics. You can find all about my research interests and papers on the links above.
I studied my UG and Ph D in the Department of Physics at Bristol University under the inspired supervison of Prof Bob Evans FRS. After 3 years post doc there I came to Imperial as lecturer and Advanced Fellow in 1992. I became Reader in 1998 and finally Professor in 2001. I was Head of the Mathematical Physics Section from 2000-2005 and also the Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics section from 2006-2012. I was visiting Professor in Wuppertal, Germany, in 1999 and currently also hold a Chair of Excellence in the Department of Mathematics, Carlos III , Madrid.
Teaching
From 2002 -2012 I taught "Classical Mechanics" (M1A1) to First Year Mathematicians. This comprises 33 lectures covering Newton`s original formulation starting from One Dimensional Systems and leading to more advanced topics including Gravity and Central Forces, Rotating Frames and an Introduction to Many-body Systems and Rockets.
Since 2000 I have been teaching "Mathematical Functions" (MPhys 1) to First Year Physicists. This is an introduction to the Calculus and its applications including Limits, Differentiation, Riemannian Integration, Partial Differentiation, The Chain Rule for functions of more than variable and Saddle points.
