Sedmnáctý listopad je z pohledu československé historie významným a symbolickým datem, ať už máme na mysli uzavření českých vysokých škol a perzekuci studentů v roce 1939 anebo Sametovou revoluci o padesát let později. Sedmnáctý listopad však byl také dnem, kdy bylo v roce 1952 v Národním divadle slavnostně vyhlášeno založení Československé akademie věd a zrušeny dosavadní vědecké instituce a společnosti.

Kořeny dnešní Akademie věd ČR však bezesporu leží ve vědeckých společnostech a institucích, které zde existovaly právě před rokem 1952. Velmi významnou úlohu v tomto ohledu sehrála zejména Česká akademie věd a umění, která vznikla v roce 1890. Nikoliv náhodou tak Akademie věd ČR mohla v roce 2015 oslavit 125 let své existence. Z pohledu historiografie československé vědy byl ovšem vznik ČSAV v roce 1952 zásadním milníkem, jenž měl dopad nejen na osudy dosavadních vědeckých společností a institucí, ale také na život a práci mnohých československých vědců. Nadcházející číslo časopisu Práce z dějin Akademie věd, které bude vydáno v roce 2022, by tak chtělo připomenout sedmdesáté výročí tohoto pozapomenutého a méně slavného sedmnáctého listopadu.

V souvislosti s přípravou výše zmiňovaného tematického čísla časopisu Práce z dějin Akademie věd věnovaného 70. výročí založení ČSAV redakce poptává odborné studie týkající se tematicky následujících oblastí:

Vznik ČSAV v kontextu sovětizace československé vědy.

Osudy českých a slovenských vědeckých institucí a společností po roce 1952.

Významné osobnosti počátků ČSAV.

Vědecká (ne)svoboda v ČSAV a zahraniční (ne)spolupráce.

Společenské a humanitní vědy, které byly před více než třiceti lety osvobozeny z přímého politického dozoru, čelí v současnosti novým výzvám. Světová média zaznamenala události jako „zákaz“ disciplíny genderových studií maďarskou vládou nebo její tlak na Středoevropskou univerzitu, která se musela částečně přestěhovat z Budapešti do Vídně. Jsou tyto případy spíše výjimečné nebo naznačují hlubší proměny ve vztahu mezi státem a akademickým prostředím? S kterými problémy se ve střední Evropě potýkají společenské a humanitní vědy a jaký vývoj vedl k současné situaci?

Na rozdíl od jiných disciplín nejsou společenské a humanitní vědy definovány jen předmětem výzkumu a metodologií, ale také svým specifickým postavením. Jedním z nich je neustálá nutnost odůvodňovat svou existenci a význam pro společnost, protože jejich potenciál podnítit průmyslové inovace nebo hospodářský růst je omezený. Zároveň vědci a vědění v těchto oborech potřebují akademickou svobodu nejen proto, aby jejich výzkum mohl být nezávislý, ale také aby si mohli dovolit společenskou kritiku či angažovanost.

V tom je pro existenci společenských a humanitních věd klíčová vědní politika, protože ty více než jiné obory závisí na veřejných financích. Od mezinárodní úrovně až po institucionální samosprávu jsou pro ně zásadními otázkami způsoby financování, hodnocení kvality a vědeckého managementu. Vedle postsocialistického „dohánění“ Západu byla po roce 1989 vědní politika konfrontována s výzvami, které byly nové na někdejším Východě i Západě jako neoliberální důraz na produktivitu, marketizaci a internacionalizaci. Současné neliberální přístupy, deglobalizace a represe mohou být chápány i v oblasti vědní politiky jako reakce na vývoj předchozích desetiletí.

Toto číslo časopisu Střed/Centre poptává studie, které analyzují vědní politiku v oblasti společenských a humanitních věd ve státech střední Evropy a zkoumají produkci, společenské postavení a reputaci těchto oborů v současnosti a nedávné minulosti. Komparativní a transnacionální přístupy k tématu jsou obzvláště vítané.

Freed from direct political control more than thirty years ago, social sciences and humanities in Central Europe have been facing new challenges. Events like Hungarian government’s ‘ban’ on the discipline of gender studies or pressures against the Central European University that forced it to move some of its activities from Budapest to Vienna made news headlines internationally. Are these cases rather exceptional or do they suggest deeper changes in the relation between the state and academia in Central Europe? What are the current challenges to social sciences and humanities in the region and what development led to this situation?

Unlike other disciplines, social sciences and humanities are defined not only by their object of research and methodologies but also by their specific social position. They are challenged by the permanent need to justify their existence and relevance for the society since their potential to encourage industrial innovations or stimulate economic growth is limited. On the other hand, scholars and scholarship in these disciplines need academic freedom not only to be independent in their research but also to be socially critical and engaged.

Science policy, in its various forms and at various levels, has been the key element in the very existence of social sciences and humanities that more than others depend on public funding. From the international level to the institutional self-government, the question of funding or redistribution of funds, of quality assessment or of scientific management remain vital. Next to the post-socialist ‘catching up’ with the West after 1989, science policy was soon confronted with challenges that were new to both the former East and the West such as the neoliberal emphasis on productivity, marketization, and internationalization. Current illiberal attitudes, de-globalization, and repressions may be a reaction to the development of the previous decades.

This issue of Střed | Centre calls for papers analysing science policy towards social sciences and humanities in Central European countries and their production, social position and reputation in the present and recent past. Comparative and transnational approaches are especially welcome.

The conference is organized to commemorate the centenary of the Oriental Institute in Prague. Since its inception, this institution has reflected the interconnection of cultural and economic circles, both in practice and research, which has contributed to the establishment of Orientalist disciplines (not only) at the Charles University in Prague. The beginnings of research in Oriental Studies in Europe came to the forefront of scientific circles rather slowly. The great syntheses that arose in the Western European environment drew attention to the specific development of individual disciplines and their gradual establishment, from the interest in biblical languages to comprehensive studies of Oriental countries in its broadest sense.

Oriental Studies has been established in European universities since the end of the 19th century, and in connection with the growing economic interest in the Middle East and Asia, Oriental societies and institutes were founded. Middle East and Asia-focused scholarship have had a long tradition in the Czech lands since the 19th century. After the division of the university into its Czech and German factions in 1882, lectures were held at both universities, and in the interwar period, there was a wide range of disciplines from Hebrew and Arabic Studies to Turkology, Iranian Studies, Indology, Hittite Studies, and Egyptology. The Oriental Institute in Czechoslovakia was founded in 1922 and, despite numerous regime changes, the hardships of World War II, and the reconstruction of academic infrastructure after the war, it has been carrying out its mission for a hundred years.

Fees and provided services

There is no conference fee. Accommodation for the duration of the conference is provided to the selected speakers. Refreshments are also provided throughout the conference. Transportation is the responsibility of the participants.
