Areál rozšíření mauricie převislé (Mauritia flexuosa) zahrnuje téměř třetinu jihoamerického kontinentu, kde často tvoří čisté porosty na mnoha tisících hektarů. Tato palma je tak určující dřevinou tamních ekosystémů a mohla by se využívat k obnově krajiny, která je v poslední době silně devastována ve snaze získat půdu pro zemědělství. Využití mauricie převislé je však mnohem širší – plody se zpracovávají na olej, kaši a jiné pochutiny, vlákna na provazy, dřeň kmenů na palmové víno.

The area of Mauritia flexuosa distribution covers almost one third of the South American continent, where it forms monoculture stands many thousands of hectares in extent. This palm is a dominant tree species in ecosystems and it can be used in the revitalization of countryside which has been highly devastated in recent years due to actions aimed at acquiring land for agricultural purposes. Nevertheless, this species offers a wide range of other uses – the fruits are used for the production of oil, as mashed fruits or other tasty foods, the fibres are used to make ropes and the pulp of stems to produce palm vine.
