The Council of the Astronomical Institute of the CAS invites applications for a position of director of the institute.

 

Closing date: 18.2.2022 

Requirements:

  • higher education and scientific or scientific-pedagogical qualifications in the field of astronomy and astrophysics or in related fields,

  • major results of scientific activity in astronomy and astrophysics or related fields,

  • organizational skills and management experience,

  • active knowledge of English, good understanding of Czech (inevitable communication with Czech authorities),

  • moral integrity,

  • integrity according to § 17 par. 4 let. b) and c) of Act No. 341/2005 Coll., on public research institutions, as amended,

  • fulfillment of conditions according to Act No. 451/1991 Coll., which lays down certain other preconditions for the performance of certain functions in state bodies and organizations of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, as amended (does not apply to applicant who is not a citizen of the Czech Republic).

The director of the workplace cannot be a member of the management or control bodies of legal entities conducting business activities and may not participate in the business of legal entities operating in the area that is the subject of the institute activities. This restriction does not apply to the management of own property (Section 17, Paragraph 6 of Act No. 341/2005 Coll.).

Expected term of service: May 1, 2022 to April 30, 2027

Applications and their annexes shall be submitted in writing in Czech or English.

Application consists of: 

  • structured CV,

  • evidence of higher education attainment and scientific or educational qualification,

  • overview of employment history,

  • list of major scientific achievements and publications,

  • the concept of workplace management and the direction of its activities, including the future development of the workplace,

  • certificate of criminal record not older than 3 months1),

  • affidavit of good faith pursuant according to § 17 par. 4 let. c) of Act No. 341/2005 Coll.1).

1) An applicant who is not a citizen of the Czech Republic shall enclose an affidavit proving the fulfillment of the conditions according to Section 17, Paragraph 4 of Act No. 341/2005 Coll.

The selected candidate has to present the fulfillment of the conditions pursuant to Act No. 451/1991 Coll. to the hands the president of the CAS at the latest on the day of the appointment as director of the institute.

Postdoctoral Position at the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences

We are Public Research Institution and the largest professional astronomical organization in the Czech Republic, located at Ondrejov observatory and in Prague. Successful applicants will collaborate with researchers in our scientific departments (theory, observation, and data analysis are all welcome). Recently the Institute has been involved in space programs of ESA and ground-based projects within ESO. Experience in one of the subjects studied at the Institute is valued but independent new projects will be also considered.

The appointment is initially for one year; an extension for another year is expected upon satisfactory scientific performance. A necessary condition is to satisfy legal requirements for the employment in Czech Republic (EU member state). Salary will be based on the domestic level and it includes health insurance. There is a possibility of institute accommodation in Ondrejov; in Prague private accommodation has to be arranged.

In a cover letter please indicate the working group that you intend to join. Applicants should contact a faculty member with whom they wish to work for further information, to define a joint research programme and to discuss the starting date. This is considered to be an important part of the proposal.

Please provide the exact date of PhD defense. Applications can be submitted before finishing PhD, in which case a statement from the supervisor stating the planned date of the defense should be included. Successful candidates must hold PhD degree in the field and present a certificate of that by 20th March 2022. Preferences will be given to early-stage researchers.

Postdoctoral Position at the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences

The Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences invites applications for one post-doctoral position in the Relativistic Astrophysics Group at the Prague section of the Institute. The appointment is initially for one year; an extension for two more years is expected upon satisfactory scientific performance and availability of funds. The position will be funded through the project “Impact of Resonances and Chaos in Gravitational Waves from Extreme Mass Ratio Inspirals”, which is supported by the Czech Academy of Sciences. The salary will be based on the domestic level and it includes health insurance. Commencement is expected on the 1st of January 2023, but an earlier commencement can be arranged.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate research experience at least in one of the following topics: orbital dynamics in EMRIs (Mathisson-Papapetrou equations, effective one-body approximation, self-force, post-Newtonian mechanics), gravitational waves (analytical and numerical calculation, data analysis, synergy with electromagnetic signatures), chaos theory in dynamical astronomy. A successful applicant will join Georgios Loukes-Gerakopoulos and his research team.
