Ceremonial presentation of the Rudolf Brdička Medal

On Thursday the 26th of August, 2021, the ceremonial presentation of the Rudolf Brdička Medal for 2020 took place at the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry. The laureate was Prof. RNDr. Jiří Zima, CSc., Dean of the Faculty of Science, Charles University, who received the medal from the Director of the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry, Prof. Martin Hof, Dr. rer. nat., DSc.

The Rudolf Brdička Medal is awarded as a tribute to outstanding scientific personalities in the field of physical-chemical sciences who have contributed to the scientific development of the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry through long-term scientific or methodological activities.

Prof. RNDr. Jiří Zima, CSc., Dean of the Faculty of Science significantly contributed to the strengthening of cooperation between the Faculty of Science of Charles University and the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry, in the field of research and education of students. The research of Prof. Zima overlaps to a large extent with scientific activities with our Institute, as evidenced by a number of joint publications. In his research, he focuses mainly on voltammetric methods of analysis of biologically active organic compounds important from the point of view of environmental protection or human health, development of new methods for determination of these substances using carbon paste electrodes.

„Prof. Zima has a very positive attitude to the entire CAS. He knows that Czech science will prosper to the best if University and CAS are collaborating. Scientifically, analytical aspects of electrochemistry are very close to what we are doing“ explains the director of the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry.

The Rudolf Brdička Medal bears the name of an important Czech academic and professor of physical chemistry at Charles University. Rudolf Brdička was a pupil of the Nobel Prize winner Jaroslav Heyrovský. He dealt mainly with redox reactions of organic compounds and also with the medical application of polarography. He was the founder of the Czech School of Physics and Chemistry and also the author of excellent university textbooks.

The J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic develops the scientific legacy of Nobel Prize winner Professor Jaroslav Heyrovský in fields related to physical chemistry. Over two hundred scientists, from promising young researchers to world-renowned top experts, are dedicated to excellent basic and applied research at this public research institution. Theoretically known and experimentally acquired knowledge of physicochemical processes taking place in molecules and atoms are important for industrial catalysis, energy production and storage, health care and the environment.
