Biophysical principles of mass and energy transfer between plants and their environment, data on the anatomy and morphology of fossil assimilation organs and plant experiments show that it was the paleoconcentration of carbon dioxide that decided what the leaf of most plants looks like today. This article reconstructs the processes leading up to the current form of the flat leaf with branched veins and numerous stomata.
