Petr Bílek won the Vice-Rector's Award of Masaryk University for Excellence in Doctoral Studies

Petr Bílek, a postdoctoral researcher at the Pulse Plasma Systems department of IPP, won the Vice-Rector's Award of Masaryk University for Excellence in Doctoral Studies for the academic year 2020/2021.

The Vice-Rector's Award is intended to graduates of the doctoral studies, which during their Ph.D. studies produced mainly the first author's publications in the best journals (typically Q1 journals in respective fields), or another field-specific excellent result. Moreover, their studies were completed in the standard period of study and resulted in a high-quality dissertation. The award carries a financial bonus of CZK 25,000 for both the student and their lecturer.See more here.

Petr Bílek completed his doctoral studies at the Department of Physical Electronics at Masaryk university under the supervision of Dr. Zdeněk Bonaventura and he passed the state doctoral exam on October 1, 2020 with excellent results.

His dissertation 'Towards predictive and reliable models of plasma chemical kinetics' aims at the improvement of a diagnostic approach used to determine electric fields in transient and non-equilibrium discharges in air. It is a widely used non-invasive spectrometric method for electric field determination, which is applied to investigate both laboratory plasmas (DBD, corona discharges, streamer discharges), as well as geophysical plasmas (transient luminous events - red sprites, blue jets).

Several dissertation-related  Plasma Sources Science and Technology articles prepared in collaboration with the Pulse Plasma Systems team have seen an immediate and positive response in the low-temperature plasma community, as evidenced by the rapid and continuous increase in citations. Petr Bílek also presented the main points of his dissertation in an invited lecture at the largest conference on plasma physics (7 3rd Annual Gaseous Electronics Virtual Conference, October 2020).

Petr Bílek joined the Pulse Plasma Systems team at the very beginning of 2021 and has since authored/co-authored three other articles in Plasma Sources Science and Technology.
