Tento článek zahajuje seriál věnovaný českým názvům živočichů, rodovým i druhovým, které mají původ v domorodých jazycích Austrálie a Oceánie. První díl je zaměřen na názvy savců Austrálie a Nové Guiney, zahrnující vačnatce a dále dinga. Analýza si všímá jak taxonomických vztahů mezi jednotlivými druhy, tak i jazykové stránky, původu a významu jejich názvů a cest, jimiž tyto názvy pronikly do češtiny. Největší množství výpůjček pochází z dnes již vymřelého australského domorodého jazyka dharuk, jímž mluvili obyvatelé v oblasti dnešního Sydney, kde na konci 18. století vznikla první evropská kolonie.

This article is focused on an etymological analysis of Czech names of mammals (both generic and specific) borrowed from the native languages of Australia and the Pacific Islands. This first part is dedicated to names of some mammal species of Australia and New Guinea, including marsupials and the dingo. The analysis takes account of both, taxonomic relationships between taxa of mammals and linguistic, mainly etymological, relationships between their names. The differences between names in original languages and in Czech or scientific nomenclature are also included. The author of this article searches for the original meanings of the names and reveals the ways these borrowings were implemented in the Czech language. The most frequent sources of the borrowings of Czech names of Australian mammals taxa is Dharuk, a now extinct aboriginal Australian language from New South Wales, where the first European settlements were established and where Sydney is located today.
