Pavel Vlček studied art history and general history at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague (1968–1974, PhDr. 1974). Between 1975 and 1978, he worked as a curator at the City of Prague Museum where he prepared exhibitions such as Shooting Targets and Prague in Images from the First Half of the 19th Century. Between 1978 and 1979, he worked at the Regional Centre for Heritage Conservation in Ústí nad Labem and between 1979 and 1981 he was a curator in the Teplice Regional Museum where, along with Jaroslava Glogarová, he prepared the exhibition Art-Nouveau Ceramics. In 1982, he began to work at the Department of Documentation, Prague Centre for Heritage and Nature Conservation. He also worked for the State Restoration Studios (1987) and the State Institute for Renovation of Heritage Sites and Buildings (from 1988 onward) where he was a draftsman and later chief draftsman at the historic-building survey section headed by Dr. Jan Muk. In 1992, he became a researcher at the IAH CAS, specializing in Prague topography. Also in 1992, he began teaching at the Faculty of Architecture, CTU in Prague (Associate Professor 2002, Full Professor 2010). Vlček was the principal investigator for the grant project Umělecké památky Prahy (three GA ČR grants in total) and is currently the principal investigator for Encyklopedie architektů, stavitelů, zedníků a kameníků v Čechách.
