Zveme vás na diskusi o koncepci a významu tohoto edičního celku za účasti vedoucího redaktora Spisů Jiřího Brabce a historiků Josefa Tomeše, Vratislava Doubka a Petra Zídka. Debatu moderuje redaktorka Českého rozhlasu – Vltava Milena M. Marešová.

Pohraniční regiony byly ve střední Evropě v některých historických obdobích odděleny nepropustnou státní hranicí, v jiných zase představovaly téměř jednolitý prostor. Vždy je však bez ohledu na hraniční režim propojovalo životní prostředí. V životním prostředí a různých přístupech k němu po obou stranách hranice se tak odrážely odlišnosti v politice, hospodářských zájmech nebo kultuře. Politika utvářená v centru mohla přispívat ke společnému řešení problémů životního prostředí v pohraničí, stejně jako vyvolávat přeshraniční „ekologické války“. Známými příklady je třeba dlouhodobý spor mezi Českou republikou a Rakouskem o jadernou elektrárnu v jihočeském Temelíně, slovensko-maďarské rozpory ohledně vodního díla Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros nebo nedávný česko-polský konflikt ohledně hnědouhelného dolu Turów v jihozápadním Polsku.
Vztah k životnímu prostřední pohraničních regionů však neformovaly jen konkrétní konflikty, ale také každodennost spojená s utvářením a udržováním přeshraniční infrastruktury nebo společný přeshraniční postup při užívání přírody a jejích zdrojů. Příroda pohraničních regionů střední Evropy navíc mohla nést také specifické kulturní významy, které se projevovaly v regionálních a národních identitách někdy sdílených po obou stranách hranice, jindy vnímaných odlišně. Výzkum vztahu mezi člověkem a přírodou napříč pohraničím vícero států umožňuje nejen vytvořit transnacionální perspektivu ale v případě střední Evropy, v níž se prolíná evropský Západ a Východ, také kriticky přehodnotit zjednodušující mentální stereotypy o ekologickém Západu a neekologickém Východu. Výzkum pohraničí v souvislosti s otázkami týkajícími se vztahu k životnímu prostředí může sloužit jako laboratoř pro zkoumání různých cest mezi moderními a postmoderními hodnotami napříč různými státy, politickými režimy a diskurzivními prostředími.

Toto číslo časopisu Střed | Centre poptává články analyzující otázky týkající se vztahu životního prostředí a středoevropských pohraničních regionů od 19. století do současnosti. Komparativní a transnacionální přístupy jsou v této souvislosti obzvláště vítány.

In certain historical periods, the border regions of Central Europe were separated by an impenetrable state border, while at other times they were a virtually uniform area. But regardless of the border arrangement, they have always been connected by the environment. Thus, in the environment and the different approaches to it on both sides of the border were reflected differences in politics, economic interests and culture. Policies developed at the centre could not only contribute to the joint solution of environmental problems in the borderlands, they could also provoke cross-border ‘ecological wars.’ High-profile examples of the latter include the long-running dispute between the Czech Republic and Austria over the Temelín nuclear power plant in South Bohemia, the Slovak-Hungarian dispute over the Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros Dams, and the recent Czech-Polish conflict over the Turów lignite mine in south-western Poland.

Nevertheless, relationships to the environment of the border regions were not only shaped by specific conflicts, but also by the everydayness associated with creating and maintaining cross-border infrastructure or a shared cross-border approach to the use of nature and its resources. Moreover, the natural environment of the border regions of Central Europe could also imply specific cultural meanings manifested in regional and national identities, some of which were shared on both sides of the border, while others were perceived differently. In the case of Central Europe, which intersects the West and East of the continent, research into the relationship between people and the environment across the borders of several countries makes it possible not only to form a transnational perspective, but also to critically re-evaluate simplistic stereotypes regarding the ecological West and the unecological East. Borderlands research in relation to environmental issues can serve as a laboratory for exploring the different paths between modern and postmodern values across various states, political regimes and discursive environments.
This issue of Střed | Centre will be devoted to articles analyzing issues related to the relationships of the environment and Central European border regions from the 19th century to the present day. Comparative and transnational approaches will be particularly welcome in this context.

Themes of potential contributions could include, for example:

changes in the relationship of people to the environment in the border regions;

the influence of agriculture and industry on the environment of the border regions;

environmental conflicts between states and their impact on the border regions;

cross-border nature conservation;

cross-border cooperation in the management of natural disasters;

tourism in the border regions.

The conference is organized to commemorate the centenary of the Oriental Institute in Prague. Since its inception, this institution has reflected the interconnection of cultural and economic circles, both in practice and research, which has contributed to the establishment of Orientalist disciplines (not only) at the Charles University in Prague. The beginnings of research in Oriental Studies in Europe came to the forefront of scientific circles rather slowly. The great syntheses that arose in the Western European environment drew attention to the specific development of individual disciplines and their gradual establishment, from the interest in biblical languages to comprehensive studies of Oriental countries in its broadest sense.

Oriental Studies has been established in European universities since the end of the 19th century, and in connection with the growing economic interest in the Middle East and Asia, Oriental societies and institutes were founded. Middle East and Asia-focused scholarship have had a long tradition in the Czech lands since the 19th century. After the division of the university into its Czech and German factions in 1882, lectures were held at both universities, and in the interwar period, there was a wide range of disciplines from Hebrew and Arabic Studies to Turkology, Iranian Studies, Indology, Hittite Studies, and Egyptology. The Oriental Institute in Czechoslovakia was founded in 1922 and, despite numerous regime changes, the hardships of World War II, and the reconstruction of academic infrastructure after the war, it has been carrying out its mission for a hundred years.
