CERGE-EI Media Highlights for November

15 December, 2020

The re-opening of the schools, the results of the US presidential election, or the ongoing debate on tax changes were topics commented on by our experts for Czech media during November. Researchers from the CERGE-EI and the IDEA think tank had their say at various public conferences focused for example on the covid-19 epidemic, the future of the Czech industry, or education.

The US presidential election made the headlines all around the world, and the Czech Republic was not an exception. CERGE-EI founder, Jan Švejnar, who is also the Founding Director of the Center on Global Economic Governance at Columbia University, shared his views on the election of Joe Biden in an interview for the Ekonom magazine.

Professor Švejnar was also a guest of the "Good Morning" show of the Czech Television in which he spoke about the election but also about CERGE-EI and differences between the Czech and US education system.

Klára Kalíšková from the IDEA think tank repeatedly answered questions related to the abolition of the super-gross wage and other changes in the tax system, that are still being discussed by the parliament these days.

René Levínský, Daniel Münich, Štěpán Jurajda, and Václav Korbel took part in the debate on the opening of schools and the challenges the covid-19 epidemic brought to the education system.

The Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic invited Štěpán Jurajda to present a CERGE-EI study on the effects of the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies in firms.

The Neuron Endowment Fund for the support of science organized a debate with Czech scientists from various fields to cover different aspects of the ongoing pandemic. Jakub Steiner explained how mathematical models are used to prevent the spread of the infection. Julie focused on the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of the population. Julie and Jakub are both laureates of the prestigious Neuron Prizes.
