Systems important for brain excitability and its regulation mature for a long period of postnatal life.
The immature brain differs for the mature brain in its seizure susceptibility and seizure characteristics. It is now recognized that the immature brain also differs in the basic mechanisms of epileptogenesis, seizure generation and propagation. Seizure characteristics highly depend on the maturity of individual neurotransmitter systems. Our research is focused on developmental features of these systems and their participation in generation, spread and termination of seizure activity. Models of age-specific epileptic seizures and their pharmacological sensitivity are in the center of our attention.
