VWP applies to short tourist and business travels within 90 days. To realize study, work or exchange stays, applicants have to have a visa they can apply for at the closest U.S. embassy or consulate.
In order to travel without a visa, each traveller, including minors, has to fill in an ESTA registration form (https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov) and own a valid e-Passport (a passport containing computer-readable and biometric data). It is recommended to make the ESTA registration (Electronic System of Travel Authorization) at least 72 hours before travelling.
