Lecture: Prof. J. Malík

Construction of cable-stayed systems and stability of suspension bridges

Construction of cable-stayed systems and stability of suspension bridges: the lecture will be given by prof. J. Malík (UG CAS) on Friday 14 October 2022 at 10 am.

Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, CAS and the Czech Society for Mechanics invite you to a lecture and discussion

Construction of cable-stayed systems and stability of suspension bridges

given by

prof. Ing. J. Malík, PhD.

(UG CAS)

The lecture will describe a model of a suspension bridge and the interaction between the cable system and the bridge deck together with the influence of crosswinds. The stability of the bridge will be analysed with respect to the design of the cable system and the aerodynamic properties of the bridge deck profile. A stability criterion will be formulated based on the natural modes of the bridge deck. The results will be used to shed light on the causes of the 1940 Tacoma bridge collapse.

The lecture will be held on Friday, October 14, 2022 at 10:00 AM
at ITAM, Prague, small lecture room.
