Adventitious root formation in relation to irradiance and auxin supply
B. C. Jarvis, A. I. Shaheed
Biologia plantarum 29:321-333, 1987 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02886608
High irradiance during treatment of mung bean cuttings favours root formation in response to supplied auxin, whether the latter is IAA or IBA. On the other hand it is inhibitory towards root formation in the absence of supplied auxin. Light promotes the uptake of14C-IAA into cuttings and its upward movement into the leaves. When14C-IAA is applied to leaves of cuttings high irradiance favours movement of radioactivity into the epicotyl and hypocotyl. This movement is also enhanced by concomitant supply of IBA to the base of the cuttings. The irradiance under which stock plants are raised also affects the extent of root formation...
Gibberellin-like activity in pea seedlings during growth under red, blue and white light
Elzbieta Romanowska, E. Parys, J. Poskuta
Biologia plantarum 29:334-337, 1987 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02886609
The influence of blue, red and white light and gibberellic acid (GA3) on gibberellin-like activity in tissue extracts of leaves, stems and roots was investigated during growth of pea seedlings (Pisum salivum L. cv. Bördi). Higher GA-like activity was found in leaves and stems of pea plants that were growing in blue light than in those under red or white light. Patterns of change of activity were different in leaves, stems and roots, and in GA3-treated plants.
Effect of abscisic acid on betacyanin leakage from plant tissues
Tamara Pustovoitova
Biologia plantarum 29:338-341, 1987 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02886610
Effect of abscisic acid on cell permeability in leaves ofIresine u allisi hort. and roots ofBeta vulgaris L. were examined. An increase of betacyanin leakage from leaf cells was shown by ABA at 10-4, 10-7 or 10-9 M concentrations in water solution at 25 °C. The efflux of batacyanin from tissues did not change during the joint action of ABA and PEG 1000. ABA could lower the betacyanin leakage fromIresine leaves and beet-root slices under severe osmotic stress, as was found by deplasmolysis. The results suggest that ABA elicits some alteration in density of tonoplast membranes under dehydration.
Use of plant growth regulators to control flowering in citrus
J. L. Gonzales, C. G. Borroto
Biologia plantarum 29:342-349, 1987 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02886611
With the aim to increase citrus fllowering under tropical conditions, two formulations of 2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid (Ethrel and Flordimex), Alar (succinic acid-2, 2-dimethyl hydrazide) and Cycocel (2-chloroethyl-trimethyl ammonium chloride) were applied during the flower induction period (December) to young "Valencia" orange trees at concentrations of 1000, 2500 and 5000 mg l-1. These treatments effectively increased flowering, mainly at lower concentrations. Treatment using Flordimex at 500 and 1000 mg l-1 concentrations resulted in flowering increase which is analyzed in this paper.
Studies on plant growth substances, IAA metabolism and nitrogenase activity in root nodules of phaseolus aureus Roxb. var.mungo
T. K. Dangar, P. S. Basu
Biologia plantarum 29:350-354, 1987 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02886613
The mature nodules ofPhaseolus aureus Roxb. var.mungo possessed, in comparison with young and old nodules, higher activities of nitrogenase (N2ase), and indol-3-ylacetic acid (IAA) metabolic enzymes like IAA oxidase, methylene oxindole reductase and peroxidase; higher levels of IAA-like, gibberellic acid-like (GA), and cytokinin-like (CK) substances and tryptophan, and lower level of phenol. The abscisic acid-like (ABA) substance level was higher in the old nodules. The N2ase activity in the mature nodules changed parallelly with IAA and OK. butoppositely with GA and ABA. The changes in tryptophan level,...
Contribution of leaves of different ages to plant carbon balance as affected by potassium supply and water stress
J. Čatský, D. K. Velichkov, Jana Pospísilová, Jarmila Solárová, Ingrid Tichá
Biologia plantarum 29:355, 1987 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02886614
The carbon balances of whole, 21-d old French bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown in standard nutrient solution (1K) and its modifications without (OK) or surplus (2K) potassium were calculated from the daily photosynthetic carbon inputs of individual leaves, and the daily respiratory carbon losses by individual leaves, stalks and petioles, and roots. Under the three K concentrations, maximum net photosynthetic rates (Pn) were found in the 2nd or in the 3rd trifoliate leaves, maximum respiratory rates (Rd) in the youngest, 4th trifoliate leaves; the Pn/Rd ratio decreased with leaf age. In all...
Effects of salinity and gibberellin on water content, growth and mineral composition of cowpea, calabrese and red radish plants
A. M. Abdel-Rahman
Biologia plantarum 29:365-373, 1987 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02886615
Salinity had generally little influence on the water content of different parts of cowpea(Vigna sinensis L.), calabrese(Brassica oleracea L. var.botrylis) and red radish(Raphanus salivus L.) plants. Salinity showed a promotive effect on the growth of cowpea, while in calabrese the effect was either promotive or depressive depending upon the concentration of the NaCl, and in red radish plants salinity progressively suppressed growth.Total nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sodium contents of cowpea leaves were not affected by salinity treatments, while in calabrese and red radish leaves the contents of N, P and K were...
Effect of soil moisture and the phenyl mercuric acetate on the physiology of lupine and safflower
A. M. Ahmed, A. M. Abdel-Rahman, A. M. Hassanein
Biologia plantarum 29:374-383, 1987 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02886617
Transpiration rate, leaf area, the content of nitrogen and saccharides decreased with the decrease in soil moisture content from 90 % to 30 % of full field capacity. Stomatal frequency, fresh and dry matter and the chlorophyll and carotenoid contents of lupine or safflower remained more or less unaffected. After spraying with the antitranspirant (PMA) the saccharide contents were raised. As concern the lipids content and the contents of Ca, Mg and P, treated plants exhibited variable response to both drought stress and spraying with various PMA concentrations.
Chemotaxonomical and karyological comparison of three species of theGenus Allium
Sylva Zelenková
Biologia plantarum 29:384-389, 1987 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02886618
Karyotypes ofAllium fistulosum, A. altaicum andA. cepa cv. Karmen are described and protein patterns of their seeds determined by immunoelectrophoresis are compared. Esterase isoenzymes were evaluated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and isoelectrofocusing. Karyological and chemotaxonomical analysis confirmed thatA. fistulosum andA. altaicum are closely related and both species are taxonomieally distant fromA. cepa cv. Karmen.
Comparison of protein characteristics of P and F(in1) generations after distant hybridization of several species of the GenusAllium
Sylva Zelenková
Biologia plantarum 29:390-395, 1987 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02886619
Distant hybridization of several species of the genusAllium was performed. It was found that disharmony of the time of flowering of the parents may be overcome by storage of pollen ofA. fistulosum at 40 % humidity and 0 °C. Protein patterns of parents and F1 hybrids were compared using immunoelectrophoresis, esterase isoenzymes were evaluated by electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel and isoelectrofocusing. Parents and relevant hybrids differ from each other. Certain differences were found between reciprocal hybrids.

Lidia Kovaleva, Elvina Milyaeva
Biologia plantarum 29:396-398, 1987 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02886620
Immunodiffusion tests were used for studying protein composition of apical buds ofRudbeckia bicolor andPerilla nankinensis during their transition from vegetative to reproductive state under inductive photoperiodic conditions or GA3 treatment. In both species the induced buds differ from the vegetative ones in the presence of specific proteins (P): P1, P2, P3 appear inRudbeckia apical buds 2, 8, 16 d after the start of inductive treatment; P4 appears inPerilla apical buds 6 d after inductive treatment. P1, P2, P4 are revealed in induced buds in the early period of apex development when morphogenetic changes are...
