Anna G. Piotrowska, jedna z našich letošních stipendistek Fellowshipu Josefa Dobrovského, představí svůj výzkum ve středu 19. 11. 2022 v přednášce nazvané ‘Gypsiness’ in Mácha’s Cikáni.
The novel Cikáni (1835) by Karel Hynek Mácha is considered to be a typical romantic piece of work with the Roma as symbols of freedom. Furthermore, it is commonly known that Mácha felt sympathetic toward the Romani lot. However, his ‘Gypsies’ are the ‘fake’ ones and the whole idea of ‘Gypsiness’ as presented by him requires, in my opinion, the more in-depth and upadted insight. This lecture will revisit the novel in a comparative context and will draw parallels between Cikáni and other 19th century novels or epics depicting the Roma.
