Initiatives taken by women during the Middle Ages, particularly those of the upper social strata, were reflected strikingly in art, regardless of whether the women had commissioned the works, were benefactors, or were directly involved as active participants in a wide range of activities as founders. One should not overlook the actual creative activities of women – in all social strata they could doubtless also work as artists. Conference contributions on topics from art history (including architecture, sculpture, painting, and the decorative arts) will be accompanied by, among other things, discussion of questions in literary history and musicology. The conference seeks to provide space for wide-ranging interdisciplinary discussion at an international level.

The conference will be held on November, 10th –11th, 2022, at the Academic Conference Centre, Husova 4a, Prague.

The international conference is organized by the Institute of Art History of CAS and Masaryk Institute and Archives of CAS with the support of the Strategy AV 21 Programme.

During the nineteenth century, the field of European politics witnessed a host of significant changes, prominent among them being the increasing tendency towards its professionalization. Against the backdrop of major social and cultural shifts, politics ceased to be exclusively regarded as the traditional elite’s ‘duty of honor’ and opened its doors, first to the middle class and then, with the extension of the franchise, to lower social and professional strata. It thus became more representative and more accessible to the average citizen, but also grew increasingly polarized and more easily swayed by group interests. These developments, combined with the education of the public’s taste for political spectacle, have, among other things, increased electoral spending and accelerated the establishment of political parties, in their initial shape as semi-formal ideological platforms lacking formalized membership and sometimes even clear hierarchical levels.

The increased financial requirements of the political game and the de- or semi-centralized party system worked to boost the role of individual actors at all levels. The success of the party as an organization relied on the fortunes (both financial and electoral) of local supporters, of which only a minority were both willing and able to turn politics into a trade. A handful among the latter joined the ranks of the party leadership, epitomizing its ideological commitment, while the bulk of party adherents remained dependent on their home constituencies and local electoral pools for the preservation of their parliamentary seats. Even so, the wide majority of the political representatives of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries seem to have chosen politics not as a definitive ‘career’, but rather as a means to elevate their professional track record and prestige. Highest-level politics was not a long-term game for most of its players. The high rate of turnover in the composition of parliaments during the period is complemented by entangled career paths, in which central representative positions usually cover a fairly short time span of a few years, frequently followed by a return to one’s original professional field (sometimes to a higher position) and to local politics. Interconnections between the legislative and executive powers have made it possible for supporters of the ruling party to swap or trade political functions for administrative ones, turning politics into a vehicle for professional and sometimes even social mobility for those who had the pecuniary means or the charisma to enter it in the first place, and the ability to successfully navigate failure, corruption and public pressure.

Seminář je věnován vztahu T. G. Masaryka k ženskému hnutí, feminismu, ale i konkrétním aktérkám a aktérům ženského hnutí. Od počátků Masarykova působení jako veřejného intelektuála můžeme sledovat zájem o tzv. ženskou otázku. Tento zájem však není jen čistě teoretický, ale promítal se i do vztahů T. G. Masaryka k různým ženám, ke kterým choval obdiv a čerpal od nich inspiraci (Z. Šemberová, Ch. Garrigue). Od devadesátých let 19. století Masaryk vystupuje aktivně ve prospěch požadavků ženské emancipace a v mnoha textech i politických projevech jako poslanec a jako občan reflektuje tzv. ženskou otázku a vyslovuje se pro rovnoprávnost. V nově založeném Československu pak ženy získají pasivní i aktivní volební právo zakotvené v nové ústavě. V teoretické i praktické rovině byl Masaryk velkým podporovatelem emancipace a udržoval kontakty s představitelkami ženského hnutí u nás i v zahraničí, přesto se v jeho vlastní politické sféře objevovalo překvapivě málo aktérek na důležitých pozicích hradní kanceláře nebo v zákulisí politiky. Cílem semináře je tak představit nové příspěvky a pohledy na ženy v Masarykově okolí, jeho podporovatelky z řad ženského hnutí, intelektuální souputnice, ale i případné odpůrkyně, dále na jeho kontakty a spolupráci s ženským hnutím u nás i v zahraničí, na jeho místo v dějinách českého, potažmo středoevropského emancipačního hnutí. Na straně druhé uvítáme i příspěvky, které zachytí téma „TGM a ženy“ v jeho ambivalenci a budou si klást otázky nejen po přítomnosti žen v Masarykově okolí, ale i po důvodech jejich nápadné absence v mocenských a kulturně-elitních sférách (hradní kancelář, strany blízké TGM, pátečníci).

Zájemci o aktivní účast na semináři se mohou přihlásit nejpozději do 20. října 2022 zasláním vyplněné přihlášky (viz přiložený formulář). Délka příspěvku by neměla přesáhnout 20 minut.
