"An Ebbing Tide Lowers All Boats": How the Great Recession of 2008 Affected Men and Women in Central and Eastern Europe

Beáta Nagy, Éva Fodor

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2014, 15 (2): 4-18 | DOI: 10.13060/12130028.2014.15.2.127

In this paper we explore the impact of the economic recession of 2008 on gender inequality in the labour force in Central and Eastern European countries. We argue that job and occupational segregation protected women's employment more than men's in the CEE region as well, but unlike in more developed capitalist economies, women's level of labour force participation declined and their rates of poverty increased during the crisis years. We also explore gender differences in opinions on the impact of the recession on people's job satisfaction. For our analysis we use published data from EUROSTAT and our own calculations from EU SILC and ESS 2010.

Caring Women's Precarious Work in the Context of Economic Crisis

Radka Dudová, Hana Hašková

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2014, 15 (2): 19-32 | DOI: 10.13060/12130028.2014.15.2.128

Caring Women's Precarious Work in the Context of Economic CrisisAbstract: In this article the authors examine the forms and experiences of insecure and precarious work by Czech women caring for a child or a dependent family member. The results of a quantitative survey indicate that the share of caring women performing precarious work increased during the economic crisis. A secondary analysis of interviews conducted in 2006-2013 with women caring for a child or another family member offered insight into the forms precarious work can take and the ways women feel about this kind of work and why. It also demonstrated in what way, based on the capability...

The second wave of anti-feminism? Post-crisis maternalist policies and the attack on the concept of gender in Poland

Dorota Szelewa

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2014, 15 (2): 33-47 | DOI: 10.13060/12130028.2014.15.2.129

This article argues that, despite Poland's better situation during the economic crisis, the long-lasting rationalisation of permanent austerity overshadows and hinders any alternative solutions in the field of social policies. In this sense, the crisis that hurt the economies of many other countries represented a reference frame for adhering to the path of austerity policies in Poland. The neoliberal track in social and economic policies was accompanied by the strengthening of their conservative pillar: any slight improvements in family policies took a maternalist direction, with a well-paid maternity leave prolonged to one year without the same individual...

(Mal)adjusted to the Crisis, Disabled for Citizenship? Disability and Race in Discourses of "the Crisis"

Kateřina Kolářová

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2014, 15 (2): 48-60 | DOI: 10.13060/12130028.2014.15.2.130

Interrogating the austerity measures introduced by the Czech government under the Prime Ministry of Petr Nečas (2010-2013), this essay wishes to highlight the importance of the translations of the political into the registry of morality, which Chantal Mouffe identifies as features of post-politics, for (re)establishment of social hierarchies and inequalities based in difference. In particular, I demonstrate the strategic importance of "disability" and the racialised concept of "maladaptation" for such post-political reformulations of the political and normative outlines of abled citizenship. After mapping out the ideological deployment of the idea...

Intersectional Perspective in the Analysis of the Impact of the Crisis on Life Courses in the CR: Gender, Class, Age (and Parenthood)

Alena Křížková, Lenka Formánková

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2014, 15 (2): 61-76 | DOI: 10.13060/12130028.2014.15.2.131

The intersectional perspective represents, in Czech sociology, an untapped opportunity to examine the interaction between the different lines of inequality in the process of constantly changing social structure. This article aims to enrich current Czech sociological research in two ways. Firstly, it analyses and describes the impacts of the economic crisis on labour market relations in the Czech Republic. Secondly, it applies the intersectional perspective in a quantitative analysis of structural inequalities. In this perspective, we analyse the changing structure of the labour market between 2008 and 2012 at the intersection of gender, class (education),...

Multi-Level Marketing: A Promising Employment Opportunity for Women?

Irena Lištiaková, Lucie Jarkovská

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2014, 15 (2): 77-86 | DOI: 10.13060/12130028.2014.15.2.132

Multi-Level Marketing: A Promising Employment Opportunity for Women?Abstract: The authors analyse the discourse of Green Ways (GW), a company using multi-level marketing where women comprise the majority of distributors. The article shows that however multi-level marketing is advertised as a highly flexible form of employment suitable for those who want to combine family life with work, it is rather a way of marketing than an employment opportunity. A significant role in this business is played by women on parental leave who earn self-esteem based in the neoliberal values of self-reliance and entrepreneurial success, rather than financial income....

Gender Innovations in Small Entrepreneurship: Institutional Conditions and Management of Gender (In)equality in Copreneur Couples

Marie Dlouhá, Nancy Jurik, Alena Křížková

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2014, 15 (2): 87-100 | DOI: 10.13060/12130028.2014.15.2.133

Using the so-called embeddedness perspective, this article highlights the importance of context (time, space and institutions) for the direction of current research on the gender structure of entrepreneurship. The authors focus mainly on the effects of institutional context, namely tax and family policies, on business couples (copreneurs). The emphasis is on how these factors and formal institutions, which are reflected in informal gender norms, influence the work-life balance strategies of copreneurs. Based on a qualitative analysis of 24 in-depth interviews, the authors identify three strategies of achieving work-life balance and using welfare state...

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research 2014, 15 (2): 106-108

Care Should be at the Center of Human Life Instead of Economic Activity.
