The post looks into the place and role of Soviet medical staff among the Jewish prisoners of war (PoWs) in the camps in Central Ukraine. It analyses the policy of the Nazi occupants of Ukraine towards Jewish medical staff in POW camps, beginning in the autumn of 1941 up to the summer of 1943. Using key documents as well as interviews with former POWs, the post looks into the behaviour of Nazi officers in the camps and the “Holocaust by bullets”, the important work of Jewish medical staff and the female staff in civil hospitals who risked their lives to save Jewish prisoners. The post is part of the EHRI Document Blog special thematic series “The Holocaust in Ukraine”.
