Vznik plevelové vegetace souvisí s rozvojem zemědělství a počátkem pěstování zemědělských plodin zhruba před 10 000 let. Od té doby se z původně planých rostlin vyvinulo mnoho nových druhů přizpůsobených prostředí obilných polí či okopanin. Následkem změn v zemědělství ve 20. stol. však byly na našem území některé plevele vyhubeny, jiné jsou ohroženy. Nedošlo nicméně ke zničení veškeré plevelové vegetace, lze spíše hovořit o její další proměně.

The emergence of weed vegetation is linked with agricultural development and the beginnings of crop cultivation approximately 10,000 years ago. Since that time many new species, accommodated to the environment of grain or root crop fields, have developed from the original wild plants. The twentieth–century changes in agriculture caused the extinction of some weed species; others are endangered. Still, the weed vegetation has not disappeared completely, but rather changed its composition.
