The Socioeconomic Gradient in Child Health and Noncognitive Skills

18 November, 2021

In their most recent paper for Economics & Human Biology, available on sciencedirect.com, co-authors Liyousew G. Borga, Daniel Münich, and Lubomír Kukla examine the association between household socioeconomic status and child outcomes. They use comprehensive longitudinal data from Czech.

The paper shows that an increase in income reduces the probability of a child being in poor health. The co-authors find that low-income children are more likely to get specific health problems, but not all chronic conditions have a significant negative impact on subjective health.

The results document the importance of the role of family income on child development. The co-authors find evidence that children enter school with substantial differences in non-cognitive skill endowments based on family socioeconomic status.

The whole paper entitled "The socioeconomic gradient in child health and non-cognitive skills: Evidence from the Czech Republic" is available on sciencedirect.com.
