Detailed informationIn: In 2022 we have advertised and subsequently selected 8 candidates to various positions from Ph.D. positions (3 candidates – Vlastimil Tichý, Anoop Kumar Yadev, Jan Mašek), postdoc position (4 candidates – Filip Křikava, Eva Krivaková, Magdalena Skalníková, Batcho Adoosa Anicet) and to the postition of the director of the Institute (1 candidate – Eva Bártová). The number of applications was in average 7 with limits 1-15 candidates. In order to fulfill the OTM-R principles, the advertisements were published at the Institute web pages as well as Euraxess, with detailed description of the position (the field of work, period, required experience, knowledge of languages, salary and other conditions). In the advertisements the required documents were also listed. After the application deadline the candidates were carefully screened for the criteria of the position. The selection committee made an unbiased and non-prioritized assessment of the academic qualifications and experience with respect to the research area, technical skills, and other requirements. Subsequently, the selected applicants were invited to the interviews with presentations, they also received detailed information about the offered position. The winning candidates were selected exclusively on the merit (experience and good laboratory skills in relation to the future research).
The selection of the director of the Institute is regulated by the academic rules (selection committee is nominated by the Council of the Academy of Sciences). The requirements as well as the procedure has been discribed at the web pages of the Institute, Academy of Sciences, at Euraxess and in Czech newspaper.
A new internal regulation on the recruitment and selection of researchers of the Institute of Biophyiscs of the CAS has been adopted in September 16, 2022. Gender in leadership
Detailed information: After an introductory circle of a lecturer and participants, were introduced concepts such
as gender, gender stereotypes, socialization, and the possibility of avoiding stereotypesLater the attention was paid to case studies:
Advertising, Remuneration, Reconciliation of work and private life, Goods and services, (Sexual) harassment. An assessment of case studies of non-equal treatment took place in groups. Then the individual cases were discussed with members of other groups, as a tool for solving the cases was used a concept of a shared burden of proof. Following topics were introduced through a discussion of the specific circumstances of the individual cases: (1) Areas and grounds of discrimination protected by the Anti-Discrimination Act, (2) Direct discrimination, indirect discriminationIndirect discrimination, (3) (Sexual) harassment, (4) Persecution, instruction, incitement to discrimination, (5) Shared burden of proof. In the end, as a summary, the lecturer briefly focused on 2 general questions: (1) Why promote equality between women and men? (international and national legal obligations, existence of inequalities, public opinion, 5 arguments for gender equality) (2) How to promote equality between women and men. Participants were cooperative, informed, active. An interest was visible from the detailed discussion. The discussion was constructive and aimed at finding solutions to the often
complex problems that equal treatment brings. Discussed situations are repeatedly on the borderline between the law and ideas of each person about rules of human coexistence, on the borderline between work and private life. Through interaction and through the search for their own solutions to the case studies submitted, participants had the opportunity to experience the complexity of the agenda themselves. They were informed about possible solutions to non-equal treatment not only through sanction mechanisms, so-called ex post solutions, but also about the need for prevention and education

Title: Child-corner (nursery directly at the Institute)
Detailed information: Currently, we focus on the operation of a nursery garden; it will serve as institutional support for families with children. We consider the fact that the availability of public nurseries is considerably limited due to their low number, and we also consider low support from the government of the Czech Republic. We plan to establish a nursery with variable possibilities; children can attend this facility irregularly, that is mostly for several days a month, and/or regularly, that is every day. For parents, this nursery will provide effective service with huge variability. Nurseries can usually be entered from the age of 12 months. The admission process for children will be relatively flexible and dependent on parents' demands. The number of families using nurseries will be provided to the commission evaluated IBP implementation program. Contracts with external body-provided nurseries will be published on the National Register of Contracts.
GAP Principles: 9, 10, 24
Timing: Implementation 2021-2024; at the last quarter of each year the report about the state of child-corner will be provided.

How "radioactivity" damages our cells, how cells protect themselves from this damage, and how we can study these processes (Facebook, Twitter, Web).
Detailed information:  What connects the Jachymov spa, the planned flight to Mars and space research in general, the current occupation of Ukraine by Russia, the transformation of healthy cells into cancer cells and, conversely, the effective treatment of cancer patients, diagnostic imaging in medicine, relatively ecological energy sources, but also tragic nuclear power plant accidents, threatening terrorist attacks using the so-called dirty bomb, the largest project in the history of science (the Manhattan Project), nuclear weapons and the atomic bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, poorly built houses on "radon bedrock", research into fundamental life processes in cells, the natural evolution of organisms, a lot other important phenomena and research of the Department of Cell Biology and Radiobiology of the Institute of Biophysics of the Czech Academy of Sciences? This is ionizing radiation and its ubiquitous effect on living organisms, including humans. If you are interested in these topics, find it difficult to navigate media reports that usually hyperbolize anything related to radioactivity, need a better understanding of radiobiological units and the relationship between the type of ionizing radiation, its dose and health risk, or are professionals and just want to learn more about our research and the current state of knowledge in the field of radiobiology and radiation biophysics, then follow this new series of contributions, in which we will gradually address interesting radiobiological problems and events in more detail. The article below provides an introduction to this series.

Project "Structural gymnastics of nucleic acids: from molecular principles through biological functions to therapeutic targets" is finished (Facebook, Twitter, Web).
Detailed information:  As of October 31, 2022, the almost six-year OP VVV financing period of the SYMBIT project expired (details about the project here https://www.ibp.cz/opvvv/symbit/). The project, based on the collaboration of experts in the field of structure and interactions of nucleic acids, led by the renowned foreign scientist Jean-Louis Mergny, produced a number of original results published in more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and in a number of other communications. New knowledge about the so-called non-canonical structures of DNA and RNA, their stability and dynamics, as well as their interactions with specific ligands - potential drugs and their recognition by proteins with known regulatory roles in important biological processes have been obtained. Using experimental and bioinformatics procedures, the occurrence of sequences with the potential to create non-canonical structures in the genomes of various organisms was mapped and new knowledge about their evolution was obtained. In parallel with these studies, new methods of studying the structure of DNA and RNA were developed, including computational methods, bioinformatics tools and experimental techniques based on nuclear magnetic resonance or electrochemistry. The financing of the project made it possible to establish new foreign collaborations and for young scientists from BFÚ (doctoral students and postdocs) to complete internships abroad, where they gained valuable international experience. A series of regular seminars contributed to scientific communication within the project and externally. The activities of the SYMBIT project will be further developed within the five-year sustainability period of the project and in subsequent scientific and educational projects.

Reviewed version of the action plan/HR Strategy (including the OTM-R policy) for the next 36 months: pdf

Comments on the implementation of the OTM-R principles (Initial Phase):

Independent evaluation is performed by the Academy of Sciences in a 5-year interval (see methodology on internet pages of the Czech Academy of Sciences) with the primary goal to provide for the institute detailed information about its teams. The management of the Institute will use this information to improve team research activity, its focus as well as personal, equipment, and other aspects.

In-between academic evaluations, internal evaluation is performed by means of scientometry. All outputs of the institute are categorized using journal quality (journals are divided into quartiles and top decile according to the Article Influence Score). In addition, citations are also taken into consideration in a similar way (quartiles and top decile are calculated for each year, the field of science, and type of publication). These analyses are enclosed with the materials submitted to ISAB for consideration.

Especially, ISAB can provide recommendations on how to improve OTM-R strategy, and this part will be discussed with ISAB members every 2nd year and also OTM-R strategy will be analyzed and discussed with representatives of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

In the case of job advertisements for the job position of a researcher, the content of the advertisement is the classification of the profile of the researcher.

There are four criteria and levels:

  1. First stage researcher (R1) - doctoral student; early-stage researcher with less than four years' experience.
  2. Recognized researcher (R2) - holder of a Ph.D. academic degree; not yet fully independent with more than four years of research experience;
  3. Experienced researcher (R3) - high degree of independence with more than four years of research experience;
  4. Chief Researcher (R4) - leads his / her own research area.
