November 1989, as well as August 1968, are rightfully presented not only as major political events, but also as a spurt of spontaneous literary creativity. Of the wide volume of mostly anonymous works, only the best pieces are usually selected, published, and cited to argue for the nation’s high civic and political culture. Our intention is to show the less famous, more hidden face of the awakened public as well. The selected amateur poems mostly exemplify cheap sentiment and kitsch, nonetheless, they may reflect the collective euphoria and emotional catharsis more immediately than bright insight flavoured with hyperbole and sense of humour. A presentation of the democratic revolution should not omit this more emotional facet.
